Michael Jordan meeting the team
Today was much more upbeat. After my morning PE class I went to the private girls school to teach basketball. Over sixty girls are on the team. Unless someone has an academic commitment everyone is at practice, everyday. The courts are outside, as there are only two indoor courts in all of Kampala. If rain comes play continues unless there is lightening. My girls were so precious and eager to learn. I introduced myself as Michael Jordan, former player with the Chicago Bulls. I don't know why, but they had trouble believing me. Once we returned to reality a great practice ensued. Every drill, every instruction, and every criticism was met will full effort and positive response. Every young person I have met, no matter the circumstance, wants to achieve great hights and has the confidence and work ethic to do so. The prevalent attitude is clearly "show me how and I will do all that is necessary to reach the prize." it would be wonderful if I could bottle this magic and pour it on my students back home. We should feel ashame to call ourselves African Americans until we ready and able to unilaterally honor this culture so rich

in pride.

After practice the girls circled me. One with big soft brown eyes and a heavy Swahili accent asked: "so you leave and you will never return to us?" Kenneth, my staff escort, flashed an "I told you so" smile and waved me on to respond. I explained I may be there Tuesday and was departing for Gulu Wednesday. Rachel responded: "we have a game Wednesday and would very much like you to come see us play." There was suddenly a chours of voices joining in. Suddenly, my heart became very joyful and weak...I now depart for Gulu Thursday!

I taught in the rain during the morning class and Kenneth and I were caught in a heavy downpour while on a motorbike. Yes, there are often three or for people on a small motorbike. I'm feeling a little under the weather today, so I'm going to rest and regain my strength before I head north. There is uncertainty in the Sudan due to the issuance of the ICC arrest warrants this week and my funds are dwindling so I will be cutting my trip short and meeting Ann, one of the co-founders and my inspiration here, in

London to debrief and discuss future collaborations.

This is Major Obama country sports fans! Everyone wants to know about Obama and they seem to want reassurance from me he will win. The Middle Eastern and UK news here is also clearly hoping for an Obama win. Yes, there is great intelligence beyond the Bible-Belt.

Thanks for all the wonderful positive and supportive comments, it is as if everyone is here with me. I miss you all and look forward to hoisting some wine or beer with you when I return.

Excruciating joy
It must be excruciating for you to leave a country and its people you whom you have come to love. You can be happy that you have spread some hope and a sport which children can play and enjoy long after you have gone.

how high can you jump?
I can't imagine why they didn't believe you are Michael Jordan. Take care as you travel north.
