Friday 6/24 at 7am Thursday we did home visits again, and that is definitely the best experience. I chose ten kids from my class to go on a walking field trip around Usa River and see where they live, where they come from, get their personal story, meet those they live with, and just get to know them (and this place) on a deeper level. It was amazing, especially because I got to select the students from my class so I really know their personalities now and have grown so connected to the kids that it's great to see where they come from and gain a greater understanding of each child. And it really puts everything into perspective. Every one of the 10 children live in a local mud hut.. share a bed with atleast one ... read more

6-22 Wednesday @ 7am I woke up and 4.30am and I've just been restlessly laying here until the light came out, and now I guess I'll fill you guys in a bit on the hap. It doesn't matter what time I wake up, once I wake up... I just can't go back to sleep - those of you who know me well, know that's not the case at home! I do go to bed very early here, I'm so tired by the end of the day but they don't make dinner until around 8.30ish so I eat at the am usually in bed by 9. We don't eat with the family, its just jake and I and than the two housekeepers, Bibi Sara and Shakira, who are sitting with the screaming babies feeding them. Those babies ... read more

Saturday 6/25 @ 730am Yesterday was definitely an interesting day.. biggest ups and downs! So the day started off by going to the school and Jake and I thought it was test day for middle class (supposed to be every friday in June) but Anna said that it was not prepared so it was just play day. The kids played on their own for a while and than gathered for songs and dancing games (my favorite) and yes, I did take videos and yes, they are quite fantastic. They do the most amazing songs, its got to be my favorite part of the orphanage. We took a break around 11 for oogie (porridge) and than back to playing for a bit. Next, all 60 kids gathered in the baby class B classroom (the only room at ... read more

6/18 Saturday at 730am So I've been doing small talks about the importance of malaria prevention here in usa river, and done some home visiting days to see how the people here are living and what can be done to fight malaria; I am acutally heading over to Lukendane in about an hour to do another speech and lead a community clean up as well, but there are a few updates on this project that I feel are important to share with (some of) you. Malaria is present here in Usa, but I was informed of different information before coming - malaria is actually handled quite impressively here...nearly everyone in usa river sleeps under a bed net, and uses them properly - even the poorest places, located in guerisero (where I work at the orphanage/school). Even ... read more

June 19th, Sunday @ noon Well I just went to the internet becasue they power was on, but the shop was closed! They are supposed to be open but I guess that's Africa - they all do as they please, no regulations to guide anything... the good thing is that I was in no rush, its Sunday and theres literally nothing to do, especially because its been raining all morning and absolutely dumped last night and yesterday. The 'streets' are straight mud - my shoes are brown and soo heavy now! My clothes have mud splashes all over them but everything is dirty here constantly so I can't (and dont care to) maintain a clean wardrobe. So since I walked all the way up to the main road, I figure I may as well walk another ... read more

6/17 @ 3pm - friday - oh, elizabeth This week seemed to fly by. I can't believe it's already Friday, that means tomorrow is good food day in Arusha, horray! Today was fun but definitely interesting! I woke up to rain (and as I've said before, the roads are dirt, so mud in rain!) and its a 20 minute walk to the school so that was...fun? Got there and the kids were everywhere, the rain is always exciting to kids. There was a group of about 5 boys that all had these gorgeous little beanies on, I want one!!! So Friday's are play day, but the highest class has exams every friday through june, so I gave the exams to half the class. It was on spelling and grammar, and the test goes like this - ... read more

Wednesday 6/15 @ 730 Well the week seems to go by quite quickly which is nice. Monday was fine at the orphanage, just a normal day.. but we ended up stopping to by beer from the shop to bring home and put in the fridge (which rarely works becuase of the same old story.. never electricity.) Well, turns out there was acutally electricity so we fridged the beer and go to enjoy a nice cold Kilimanjaro beer in the evening. Oh boy I crave beer here all the time but its not the easiest thing in the world, finding beer (or cold) here. So theres about 4 types or beer here.. its the same few that are in bars and restaurants and shops... you can't buy 6 or 12 packs or anything like that... its just ... read more

Monday - June 13th, 2011 @ 7am Well, that was a great weekend! The past week has flown by, but I'm happy with time going fast here because 3 months is a long time and I want mummy to get here!! I'm totally enjoying (nearly) every second... everyday is such an adventure. Saturday morning I went to Lukendane for the community clean up- but noone informed me that the kids werent coming.. hm. So, we headed into Arusha for our weekly outing to spoil ourselves! We took the dala (which is ALWAYS interesting) and got off at the top of town, walked down the main street, stopped in at yet another internet carrier place, but the whole wireless modem just isnt gonna work living in usa river. Sorry guys, no video skype! Emails once or twice ... read more
