With less than 24 hours of rest from our climb, we were off 250 clicks west on a four day journey to see some east African wildlife. Our driver and guide was named Wynluck, a very nice and well spoken man in his late 50's. He drove a Toyota landcruiser with a roof that popped up for game viewing. On the drive out there, we passed through Moshi and the second largest city in Tanzania, Arusha, as well as many small villages dotted along the way. We also spotted many indigenous Massai people, identifiable by their colourful garbs and heavy jewelery. They lived in straw huts and primarily herded cattle. We arrived near Lake Manyara, and would be staying at this inn called Haven Earth at the top of a small hill. It lay in a ... read more

We are in the village of Karatu for the last leg of our safari. So far our safari has been amazing! We've seen so many beautiful things. Snake Park -We started the safari by visiting a snake park. We saw a bunch of different snakes that are found in Tanzania and it really made us hope we wouldn't meet any of them in the wild. Specifically, we want to avoid the Black Mamba at all costs. It's a very agressive snake and its venom kills you quickly. They call it "One Cigarette Snake" because if you get bit, you won't have time to finish more than one cigarette before you die. -At the snake park we also saw a few birds, some crocodiles and some turtles. I got to hold a baby crocodile and also a ... read more

Ngorongoro Crater – 2 August in morning and 4 August We arrived at the camp at the top of the rim of the Crater at about 6.00pm. We took longer than expected because we were following one of our 4x4 vehicles which was toeing another vehicle that was carrying our tents and beds. The 2 nights we were on the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, we had our tents put up for us and we were waited on. However, as the tent vehicle arrived the same time as us, we decided to help them put the tents up so that they could cook out dinner. We could feel the air getting very cold. It ended up freezing, even with the bonfire the guides built for us. So that as soon as we had our dinner (8.00pm) ... read more

Today we had a relaxing morning, getting a chance to look around the snake park and head into the city of Arusha where we went to the supermarket and got to go on the internet for a while. Chris and I were amused at some of the cultural differences in Africa, everyone is so relaxed they are almost going backwards. We went into the supermarket around 10am only to find they had no water left, we went out and spent time on the internet and looking for other shops before heading back around 11am to buy some other supplies that we couldn’t get elsewhere. We went in we seen the same girl who had been sitting at the milk section still there, she had no more milk to put away but she was just sitting there ... read more

Damn it was cold overnight - around 3c. Straight into the truck at 6.00am with our sleeping bags for warmth then head for the Crater entrance and the steep descent to the crater floor. this is like Africa in miniature, all the game is here, in a 26 km2 area, prides of Lions, Elephants, Giraffe, Bush Bucks, Zebra, Ostriches , Hippos and on and on. The highlight was seeing a couple of Rhinoceros, albeit at something of a distance, and huge flocks of Flamingos. We have 6 hours in the park then another long drive to Lake Eyasi. I thought the red dust of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro was bad but it's nothing compared to the fine talcum like dust of Lake Eyasi that gets everywhere. By the time we get to camp Charles has gone ... read more

It has taken me a few days to process what happened this weekend. I have gone over it and over it in my head and I cannot come up with an appropriate way to put into words all that I experienced. What follows is my inarticulate attempt to conceptualize and verbalize one of the best things I have ever done. A group of us booked a three day, two night camping safari, scheduled to take us through Serengeti and Ngorongoro. I expected to see animals and vast expanses of Tanzanian countryside, but what I did not expect was to fall in love with this unforgiving and dangerous place. It is hard to explain, but when I try to understand the immense feelings that I have for this country, I think it comes from finally ... read more

How to describe three indescribable days in a short enough fashion so that you don’t nod off? It was so fabulous that words will never do it justice and even Sydney’s amazing photos and Dave’s fabulous videos will fall short because of the scope and magnitude. Safaris are on rough roads, very dusty and dirty and SOOO worth it. We left Friday about 2:30pm and within 2 hours we had giraffes walking off the road eating trees! They are so rangy and gorgeous. I had never noticed how big and knobby their knees are. At the zoo the giraffe enclosure is usually very stinky. I am happy to report that in the wild – no smell! We stopped at a Massai village and were welcomed with song and dancing. We and most of the women ... read more

The Ngorogoro Crater is spectacular. It sits about 7000 ft above sea level, at least the rim does. Our hotel balcony overlooks the crater, it almost looks like a satellite map or that you are looking at it from the plane. It is a LONG way down. The Maasai, a famous African tribe, live on the craters edge and often graze their cattle in the nutrient rich grass. Actually, Ran was on the balcony today when he heard bells and talking. The Maasai warriors were bringing their cattle by the hotel. The crater is so rich because of its history, millions of years ago it was a huge volcano, but it erupted and collapsed upon itself, creating the crater. Almost all of the animals in the crater are born and die there, the bull elephants are ... read more
