well we had an excellent few days here in mwanza. it was nice to get away from the village and see some action for a few days! haha but it wasn't all vacation, we did have a meeting with AMREF yesterday about setting up our HIV/AIDS peer education group. we're hoping to get enough $$ together to send a few people from the village to Dar Es Salaam (capital of Tanzania, 30hrs by train) for 4 weeks of training so they can return to Nyamuswa and focus on counselling and educating the people there. There are so many rural areas that just don't have the resources to help all the people in need. But most of the people would like such a thing to happen. so we'll see what we can manage. hopefully this is something ... read more

Nice flight over the pond to London. Got to spend most of the day in london which was great. just kinda walked around a bit, saw the highlights (picadilly circus, trafalgar square, the thames, big ben, the eye, etc) then back on the flight to nairobi overnight. got to nairobi, managed to get our bags transferred to precision air for our flight to mwanza. erin and addys bags, however, didn't make the final cut. as of right now addy has her bag but erin still has nothing. so we are staying another night in mwanza to see if they show up tomorrow. fingers crossed! we flew from nairobi to killimanjaro (i don't know how to spell that haha) and we saw hte mountain behind some clouds. itw as crazy! not much to do here in mwanza, ... read more

the lake is really nice although no swimming in it. polluted with some disease thing that lays eggs in your liver. or something like that. went to an island with a zoo consisting of a caged lion or a flock of impla roaming around the little island. it was nice but also kind of weird that there werent any other people there (except for the zoo keeper). real pretty . the zoo took up about 1/8 of the island and the rest was just wilderness (grass and a few trees and a lot of rocks) with a path to guide you around. met some dutch guys we knew from dar (we met them two months ago then they came out here). they work in a rural hospital here which we went around. it was ok, although ... read more

We arrived in Mwanza having been told by the Safari company that there was a Hydrofoil across Lake Victoria. I didn't believe this for a minute, but the lonely planet did say that there were boats across to Uganda. When we got there we walked to the Lake and luckily met a very nice guy from Rwanda. He spoke very good English which wasn't very common in Tanzania and also turned out to be finding out about boats to Port Bell, Uganda. He explained that there weren't any ferries since the ferry (MV Victoria) sank a few years ago (after my 2001 guide book) - I then remembered the news story. Since Lake Victoria was land locked there was no way to get another boat there easily and a new one would have to be built ... read more
