Here’s what it was like climbing up Africa’s highest mountain... The longer version of Ironman that I forgot to train for. In the week leading up to the climb I organized the date of my climb and booked a team of professionals to accompany me. Normally this is done months in advance, and for a much higher cost than the total $1000 it would cost me (Normal prices range from $1500-8000), but because I have African friends, I had some help. Aug 21: I took a bus to meet me tour guide near the mountain. “Guide Richard brotha“, he called himself. He is 50 years old and has climbed Kilimanjaro to the peak 81 times. He helped me get a great discount on the equipment, and get to the entrance of the mountain park quickly. I ... read more

Monday, March 23, 2009: We left the school of preaching at 7:30 this morning. Kamarabi was our driver and he drove us to Moshi. That is about 40 miles, maybe, but it took us quite a while to get there. Around Arusha and Maji Ya Chai it's really green and tropical, but just a little ways farther it turns into what you picture Africa as-- desert. We saw a lot of homes that didn't have windows, doors, roofs. The reason is, if you have a lot of money (or any money) you are automatically obligated to give some to your relatives if they ask it of you. So many people start to build a house with their money. Then they run out and can't finish it, but they don't have money left when their family ... read more

The African Life Hello! We’re getting close to our finish of the field work now. Actually our last day is going to be on Friday, and on Saturday we are heading off on a Safari! Three days and three national parks in the area. Lake Manyara, Tangariki and Ngorongoro National parks. After that I’m jumping on a bus on Tuesday to Nairobi. Anyway, the last week has been quit nice. We have moved to Marangu now, and we are living in a big house with a couple of German nurses and a Finish dentist. As I said earlier in a blog, the climate up here is good, but it’s still really warm around midday. The first time we came for a day trip to Marangu we didn’t like it at all, but now, I think we ... read more

Woken up today with tea in bed, the guys seemd to be working hard for there tip!!! breakfast today was beef sausages and scrambled egg. Today we were moving from the forest to moorland which meant that is was very hot plently of sun cream for Rebecca. We started the day walking in a group with Thomas and Jan and both guides. We walked a lot slower as instructed with plenty of stops to look at the wildlife. One of the guides found a cameleon which we put on thomas' hat and had a really good look at. The walking was getting a bit harder as we gained altitude. I found my own cameleon which we put on nick's white top to see if it would change colour. We stopped for lunch about half way and ... read more

Hey everyone! I am so sorry it has taken me so long to write another blog but it has been so busy. The past two weeks we have been in a village called Marangu Mwika doing evengelism. Sunday March 2nd we had a group of 12 arrive here in Moshi to help start the new church in Marangu. The group was from Oklahoma, Brent Richardson's brother Matt Richardson and niece Nicole Richardson were part of the group. They arrived late Sunday night, so Monday we let them just rest and have a relaxing day. Tuesday however we got up to head and and do evangalism in Marangu. Things did not quite go as planned and the devil was working hard on not letting us accomplish what we wanted to do. But we overcame and even though ... read more

This morning we all went to Moshi for the group's 1st African Sunday morning worship. Matt Richardson taught a great Bible class and we had one come forward and repent of sins before the worship even began. Then Grant led us in a few English songs and Richard (one of the local brethren) led us in Swahili songs, Brad Taught an amazing lesson, and Rick led us in Communion. Then we had one, ask to be added to the Lord's church in Baptism. A great morning from the very start! The Samfords and Hochdorfs both came down to worship with us as well, so we had a houseful. 102 in attendance at Moshi today. The men had a business meeting and the guests and I went to eat lunch before heading up the mountain to Maraungu ... read more

Day 4 in Marangu Well... I had several amazing pictures from Day 4 of the work being done in the Marangu area, with several exciting things to show. Over 60 bible studies were conducted that day, and one precious soul was added to the Lord's Church in Baptism, named BibiAnna. My niece Nicole lead her first Bible Study in Africa, and I had the greatest pictures of that, (she did an amazing job and I couldn't have been more proud to be there with her at that time!) along with the funny incident that happened to little Gracie. During the study Gracie was holding little EllyNeema (6 months old), while her mom was translating for Nicole, and she let out a squeal! The Babies diaper had exploded, in a way that can't even be tastefully described ... read more
