We arrived back to “Charming Chole” but not without complications, first off we were asked to pay around $3000 in Marine Park fees before even entering the Island, Chole is situated in a protected area and as such park fees have to be paid by every visitor, we were supposed to be exempt from these fees but Africa being Africa no-one had taken responsibility for writing our “exemption letter”. Bureaucracy, makes you want to scream. The short version of events, we had to wait for a week before doing anything and also had to visit the “District Commissioner” of Mafia Island, certainly a dictator in the making if ever we saw one!! So now here we are going about our daily lives as two of the Islanders, we have been accepted into a local family so ... read more

Viikon jouluseikkailun jalkeen olemme taas sivistyksen parissa! Tuntuupa hyvalta! Kysyimme, ajoimme takaisin, kysyimme taas, ajoimme toiseen suuntaan, taas kysaisimme, taas huristimme toiseen suuntaan. Lopulta paikallinen hyppasi kyytiin ja paasimme bussille. Dalla dalla luonnollisesti sullottiin tayteen, Ilpo oven vieressa istuen ja valillla joku Ilpon sylissa istuen, mina kahden tukevan naisen valissa niin tukevasti juntattuna, etta onnettomuustilanteessa tuskin olisin liikahtanut mihinkaan. Jonkinlaisen kasityksen ahtaudesta saa laskemalla, etta bussissa oli 20 paikkaa ahtaasti ahdettuna, 14 jos ih... read more

............since i posted! Very busy preparing for official opening, and we're FULL over Christmas and New Year, feeling the pressure now! We've also had lots of friends visiting in the last few months so what with that plus building and staff training, home-schooling, paperwork, shopping trips to Dar, a trip to the UK to see my Dad who's been very ill plus numerous other exceterers there hasn't been much time for blogging! All well and happy though, albeit broke! We need bookings for after the New Year (got some for next August), thankfully we have no bank loans to service!... read more

Hard to believe it’s a year since I came out here alone to prepare for the big move, so much has happened. Sometimes it feels like we’ve always been here, at others like we’ve only just arrived. Things are really moving on, we will have one Banda completely finished and furnished be Wednesday, providing the weather is good we can then take the promotional shots for marketing. The kitchens, store and office are now up and the bulk of the reception/dining area is built, the raised bar now has a roof, roughly another six weeks work and we will be able to start recruiting and staff training not to mention landscaping in an attempt to turn the site from a building site to an established looking lodge. We seem to be accumulating animals, we still ... read more

We've spent most of the last week standing at the end of the garden with a pair of binoculars gazing out to sea. We're waiting for our Dhow which is coming from Kisiju with piles of building materials on board, the tides have all been neap so it hasn't been able to sail! As there is no phone communication we don't know when it will come or if it's able to leave on a higher neap, there is however a spring tide in the early hours of friday, so.....................fingers crossed! Still no photos, have found the camera lead but, the travelblog site or our isp won't allow us to upload to this site, will try when i am in Dar next week. Very hot at the moment, the rains are trying to start, we get little ... read more
