Part 2 of my major catch-up. Basically this takes me through safari in the Kruger National Park and Swaziland. DAY 76 - AUCKLAND - SYDNEY - JOHANNESBURG The flights via Sydney were nothing special. I think I watched 5 movies or so. After my 18 hours in the air it was good to see Dad in the Jo'burg Arrivals Lounge. Went straight back to our place for the next couple of nights and had pizza for tea before having an early night since I was utterly exhausted and the time zone had changed 10 hours for me. DAY 77 - JOHANNESBURG This was pretty much a day dedicated to recovery. We went to a mall complex and watched the new Indiana Jones movie before heading back and sorted out our laundry. That's pretty much it. DAY ... read more

The best things come in small packages We arrived in Swaziland by bus, changing our minds en-route about where exactly we were going. Having been used to the HUGE distances between towns in Mozambique we hadn’t quite down-scaled our thinking properly when it came to tiny Swazi and the travelling time between towns. So we ended up in Manzini, not actually the capital, but the busiest city in the country. Although it’s quite possible to spend a bit of time in Swaziland we really only had one reason for stopping on our way to South Africa - Rhinos. They had eluded us on all safaris so far and we were determined to spot at least one here. We were not disappointed. King to the rescue Between 1988 and 1991 eighty percent of all Swaziland’s rhinos were ... read more

On our final journey with Bazza we said goodbye to South Africa and crossed over the border into the small landlocked country of Swaziland. Everyone had told us that although Swazi' was small, it was big in character and colour, and that we stood a good chance of adding to our newly acquired "animal collection" with the numerous game reserves in the area. There were several backpackers to choose from and we decided that we should be able to see and do all that we wanted in Swazi from the one place. At the last minute we chose Swazi BP which seemed the most central and was very accessible transport-wise as it was on the main road between Mbabne (Ma-ba-nee) the capital and Manzini, where we planned to take transport to Mozambique. Swazi BP was like ... read more

The day started slow. Around 10am we decided to split up the team and I got to go out with Deano, Miles, and Magugu to the rural area to the east and we filmed boys herding cattle. We did some portraits and shots of the boys with the cattle and I got a little sound, but nothing great. We kept driving and as luck would have it the first homestad we stopped at allowed us to shoot portraits of their family and around their home doing some chores. I took stills of the younger people and they loved looking at the camera and seeing their photos. It was a lot of fun and I am really glad that Jim had me with that group that day. We left the homestead, took some more portraits along ... read more
