Day 69 Sossusvlei - Highlanders 15.8.09
Today we crossed the Namibia / SA boarder and it didn't take long to notice the stark differences between the two countries landscapes. From the arid dessert landscapes of Namibia to lush green mountains just past the SA boarder it's never been clearer that we were in another country. We drove most of the day stopping briefly at a town called Springbok to do a cook shop. We eventually arrived at Highlanders, a campsite set in the heart of a vineyard. Michelle was on cook group and made beefburgers whilst I joined the rest of the group for some wine and cheese tasting, I don't remember much after that other than someone falling into the pool... Oh and the premier league season has started!!!
Day 70 Highlanders - Stellenbosch 16.8.09
We left Highlanders at about 9 am, which was good considering everyone had very sore head! We headed to Stellenbosch, SA's winelands. As it was a Sunday nothing much was open so I spent the afternoon watching and getting angry at the football before grabbing a McDonald's for dinner (our first for months) and heading to our shared dorm for a game of card's
before bed.
Day 71 Stellenbosch 17.8.09
Today was the day of the wine tour, 5 vineyards offering free wine, lot's of cheese and lunch thrown in too however me and Michelle decided to get our laundry done and watch the new Harry Potter film, it was a lot darker than the rest and offered excellent performances from Michael Gambon for his portrayal of Dumbledor and Daniel Radcliff as the tormented wizard... it was alright. After this we met with the rest of our group (who were mostly pissed) for cock-tales at a Cuban theme bar.
Day 72 Stellenbosch - Cape Town 18.8.09
Today we headed to Cape Town, home of a big flat mountain. As it was only 45 minutes from Stellenbosch we left at about 11am. After driving for nearly three months on some of the worst roads in east africa our truck, on one of the smoothest roads in south africa and after only 10 minutes decided to break down in the pissing rain (only the second day of rain we've seen). We all had to get off while that thing got fixed in the pouring rain. 2 hours later and soaking wet got to our
hostel in cape town. After some messing about with the rooms we got ready for our evening meal at a place called 'Mamma Africa's', as tonight was the last night for a lot of our group. Michelle had Warthog and I had Crocodile kebabs, which michelle preferred so i ended up with warthog! After a noisy dinner we watched a local group perform some traditional african tunes and even an original version of ben e kings 'Stand by me'. At around 10pm and with everyone going home we decided to check out the Irish bar across the road where I had Guinness!!!!! It was wonderful and sits next to gorilla trekking and lion walking as one of my trip highlights!
Day 73 Cape Town 19.8.09
Today we visited to Table Mountain traveling to the top via cable cart (terrifying) and the view from the top was brilliant! You could really see the diversity Cape Town has to offer from the big city and buzzing waterfront to the huge mountains and massive trees and townships. The top of table mountain was pretty cold so we stopped for a cup of tea and headed back down. When we got into town
we booked shark cage diving and Michelle bought some new clothes and heeled shoes since apparently skinny jeans and hiking boots don't go together?!
Day 74 Cape Town 20.8.09
Today we took a sight seeing bus around the city and saw some huge house right next to some nasty little shacks. These house must have been worth a mint although I'm sure that the smaller hut's housing the poor probably bought the value down slightly. After our tour we walked around the waterfront (an area one of our group got mugged at knife point 3 days earlier). Michelle visited the aquarium whist I looked around the shops some more. Tomorrow we were due do do shark diving and decided to check with the company that the weather would allow it, the answer was no. We were pretty gutted since this is one of only two places you can shark cage dive, although the other one is Adelaide, Australia so we'll go there!
Day 75 Cape Town 21.8.09
Today was our last full day in cape town and the last we'd see of a lot of our new friends so it was only right to have a decent sendoff so after a little bit of culture visiting a castle thingy in the middle of the city we both got free hair cuts from a local hairdressing college. After this we went back to the hostel to join the group in getting very drunk through copious amounts of Springboks (Amarula & Crem de menth) before heading to a local club called Jo'berg... that's about all I remember.
Day 76 Cape Town - Outshoorn 22.8.09
Today we left Cape Town (still drunk) and I learned that we walked back from the club at about 3am (never a good idea in south africa). We headed to Outshoorn, famous for it's ostrich farms and big caves. The scenery was lovely and we visited the most southerly point in Africa, I slept the entire journey but this what everyone told me!
