(We are ready to hit the long road again and to my surprise I find unpublished blogs waiting patiently for publication; that is what happens while life gets a grip on you) The long awaited call came suddenly, unexpectedly in the middle of a meeting addressing fundraising for the conservancy. I did not recognise the number and let it go, but the caller was persistent and on his 4th attempt I answered. “Are you still keen to help with banding raptors? Can you be ready at 5 tomorrow morning?” And without waiting for an answer, the caller went on: “Be ready at 5, it’s gonna be a long day, bring lunch, something to drink, your binocs and a camera that goes rattattat; you know, one of those machine gun style jobs; so you can capture the ... read more

Retirement in its proper sense is upon us. Jurie's turn. Oops! Now he will sympathise with me going back eight years. Sooo excited!... read more

SOP N DOP Sop n Dop aka somewhat inadequately Soup and a Dram Yeah! We went out this evening; for a change; dressed to the nines. Jurie in jeans, me in leggings and a headlamp walked down to our local bowls club for an evening of Sop n Dop. Where else in South Africa or this planet for that matter would you find such bonhomie? All 103 residents of the village gathering on a crisp autumn evening to share soup; home baked bread and a wee drop of wine in pursuit of raising funds for the local bowls club. Although I suspect it was just an excuse to booze up; for affable, amiable, friendly, genial sociability. OK. Poetic license; 102 out of a possible 160 odd people were there. I have been attending for the last ... read more

Sometimes, even in retirement, the business of life just catches up with you and despite ivy clippings waiting to be added to the compost heap, admin begging attention (any excuse not to do the admin) and windows streaked with snail visiting cards it becomes necessary to push it all aside and go ‘tramping’. Tramping is the New Zealand equivalent for our ‘hiking’, so descriptive, I just love using it. Lizziluv is visiting us from Indonesia for a week and she has been dying to go walking freely, inspecting all creatures, great and small, like only Lizzi can, especially the birds, something pretty much impossible in busy Djakarta. We also have the new Garmin GPS to test out (it seems so different to the old one) before we leave for Aus in June. So we packed a ... read more

Jip! It's official … Wian has no ants in his pants. He checked. Uwi won't let Gogo post the photo. A pity; it's soo cute. What is even more official is that the Knee-hi's have departed Witsand and are now back with their parents in Pretoria. Sigh! Walking along the nature reserve paths or along the river is just not the same without them. My skills in smelling out the enemy along the nature reserve paths are no longer in demand, neither am I required to lick faces; hands and baking bowls clean when Gogo bakes rusks. There's no denying; we are all three; Uwi, Gogo and I, Fusion are very happy to take a break from the ever insistent and pervading noise and constant why, why why? They kept us very busy… scootering; walking; climbing; ... read more

Jip! That's the buzzword in this household at the moment "Gogo,Gogo, dit is Jesus se eie,eie gogga" Wian came running along to Gogo with an almighty shiny black ant. Jean inspected the ant and decided that it was "Jesus se eie BLINK gogga". Just then Wian let loose an almighty wail; the ant had had enough and was pinching Wian like he was the devil's own. Gogo stepped in screaming with laughter and Jean sent the ant on his way to hell under wheel of his scooter. That was one of the calmer scenes in sleepy old Witsand the last two days. Jip! You have guessed it. The knee-hi's exploded into Witsand on Sunday evening. I got really worried when I saw Uwi prepping the Mercedes on Sunday morning. Were my humans on their way out ... read more

Woof! I knew it…they are off somewhere again. My humans are poring over their mountain bikes again. Ever since Gogo acquired Juliet they make these funny day trips away from home. Now it's a case of washing bikes with buckets of soapy water, rubbing bike frames with diesel soaked rags , endless spinning of wheels and checking for thorns. Do you know they spent several hundred rand on getting into a tubeless state with their tyres. Last Sunday they left me behind and went into the mountains behind Heidelberg to ride the Huysmanshoek Pass to get in some practise. Gogo came back with this wild-eyed look - exhilaration she called it. Uwi apparently has a bruise on each bum. They had to take one of the bikes into Swellendam Cycle Shop on Monday to have the ... read more

(Just a word from our dog on this beautiful place we call home.) Hello! That's me in the attached photo; bit of a cross between a German Shepherd and a Border Collie. I am a rescue dog. They say I am a pretty dog. I dunno - what do you think? They (Oupa Uwi and Gogo) rescued me from my past and changed my name from Lulu to Fusion in an attempt to get me to lose the chip on my shoulder. The past has fallen away, I still have "obsessive, compulsive barker" on my CV. My predecessor is a hard act to follow. Can you believe it, they even named my favourite place on the beach after him. Pilgrim's Point; the place where the river meets the sea. His ashes drift in the waves and ... read more
