Muizenberg Beach Hello! So today I'm writing from the internet cafe down the street and trying to put up photos, but it seems that they are too big of files for the bandwith, bummer! I will have to bring my own computer next time...or...a flash drive. I prefer not to do the first, because it may be taken from me on the street (yes, this happens quite frequently to people, but I'll just try to minimize my risk).
But anyways, I'm having a great time. I've been hanging out a lot with my roommates. We've had the rest of our orientation week with a free day on Thursday. We decided to all go to the beach. Well...little did we know that the Muizenberg beach (on the Indian ocean on the other side of the city) would be really windy. The wind mixed with the sand made it a painful experience, oh my gosh! lol. So we ended up seeking shelter in a place called Knead for lunch and I revisted fond memories of Panera Bread... Today we went to a different beach, Camps Bay, which is shielded from the Cape winds (it is windy here every day, I should have brought more
cold weather clothes) and had a great time, playing volleyball, swimming in the cold ocean and leaving satisfied although sunburned. Check out Camps Bay on the internet, you'll be pleasantly surprised :-)
Yesterday seems so long ago. I registered for my classes and I'm taking African Dance 1, Environmental Problems, Industrialization and Labor in South Africa, and History of the World Economy. I've decided to join a club called SHAWCO volunteering in an education program in a local township. I'd like to sign up the Geography, Environment, and Biology education course where the lesson plans are made by SHAWCO and I help teach them. I'm pretty excited. I'd also like to join the Hiking and Ski Club. And I'm allowed to join 3 clubs free of charge since I'm an international student- pretty cool!
After going to campus, I found out that my landlord was taking our house out on a hike, so I rushed home just in time to change and some of my housemates and I joined some other students renting from Sean (our landlord) and we piled into cars and a truck (with some of us sitting in the covered bed of the truck (not
quite Geo116 style, Tom, but close)). So, here I was going back to Muizenberg a little more prepared than last time and with a different purpose. We were actually in Kalk Bay (google it, it's beautiful!!) and I was without my camera, unfortunately. We did a hike up a mountain and I got to realize how out of shape I really am. Once we were near the top, we went inside a cave. We didn't walk right in though, we crawled. One by one, we scooted inside trying to keep the contents of our bag in place while holding out flashlights (I really need to buy a head lamp) to see where we were going. Inside there were little streams of water and bats. I went off on a side track with the leader of the group to find a nest of bats, but it wasn't there anymore. We went outside of the cave in the other direction to find an amazing view from the top. Have I mentioned how much I love to climb and hop on boulders :-) I was so glad that I made it for that nice adventure. Sean says that he goes every Friday afternoon,
Muizenberg Beach
In front of the beach. so we'll see if I get to go that often.
Oh, and classes don't start until next Friday, so I have a week free to do some exploring. My friends and I are going to do the Garden Route for three or four days (which isn't nearly enough time to do everything on it) while stopping on some cities along the coast. There's a string of cities that have really great opportunities to scuba dive, bungee jump, cage dive with sharks, etc. As well as just enjoy the natural wonders of the area. There's a great national park along the route that I don't think we'll make it to this trip, but I do think we'll be stoping at the world's tallest bungee jump. I'm not too fond of the idea of bungee jumping...but would rather skydive (yeah!!!). So, I will have to work this into the scedule as well. Well, I'll be updating this soon after I get back next weekend. And I will have a better plan for picture uploading. (Sorry the internet here is complicated.)
Write to you later! And if you happen to have a calling card and wanted to give me a call
(all my incoming calls are free) my number is 0829658854. Don't forget to put in the country code first, which I think is 27. And if I don't answer, try back in 2-3 minutes. It's even cheaper with Skype. But otherwise, KIT with email or messages. Let me know how things are going.
