Since the last entry we have stayed at Bucanneers in West Cintas. Took quite an adventure to get there (4 hours late and many wrong turns). Seems the South Africans like to change the names of their freeway exits to confuse travellers. Really nice hostel on the beach with lots to do. Friendly staff and free wine. Spent 3 days on the beach, suntanning and boogie boarding. Nights drinking, playing pool and bbq'ing. Then we were off to Plettenburg bay. Arrived in the evening and left early to see Monkeyland. Lots of different types of monkies and even more hungry mosquitos!! Highlight of the day was definately Cheetahland. Many crocs, lions, tigers, jaguars (but no bears, oh my!). Got to play with and get pics with a cheetah and a white bengal tiger. Up close you ... read more

After a slight delay...we are getting used to Africa time.....it was off on the Baz Bus to Stellenbosch. It is basically a hop on / hop off minibus service, which has the distinct advantage of being door to door and allowing the total avoidance of the main bus / train stations. Stellenbosch was the first port of call and was picture post card pretty, although the majority of the backpacking circuit probably failed to notice through the alcoholic haze....still if you can't beat them, join them. We'd already sampled South African white wines, but we are now much more informed why we like like them and very importantly, why they are cheaper. Just for the record, we visited Simonsig, Delaire (both outside Stellenbosch), Dieu Donne (In Franschoek - a corner of France) and Fairview (in Paarl). ... read more

Shark Diving Robert clearly does not work on African Time as he was outside at 7am on the dot. Sixteen to be picked up in total and I was number 5. A large American clambered onboard with two of his companions. Imagine a white, bearded Nutty Professor and you could be forgiven for thinking there is no method possible of pouring him into a standard wetsuit. Buoyancy would not be a problem. It is just unfortunate for our large gentleman that Great White Sharks are surface feeders. Rethinking the issues, how would he get into the cage? I couldn’t read Robert’s mind, but as I caught his eyes he suppressed laughter as he probably could read my mine. Such an open book am I. Waiting at the waterfront for a Brazilian honeymoon couple, Robert had locked ... read more

Finally after all the madness of Sydney town, Perth & Cape Town we arrive at this gorgous coastal town called Hermanus & feel ourselves unwind! It is easy to see why Cape Towners come here to chill out on the week ends. The coastline here is amazing. Would love to come back during whale watching season & pull up one of the 100 (seriously) benches they have along the coastal path! There is quite an upmarket & safe vibe here without it being over the top. I was stoked because I managed to drag Deano to the markets, overlooking the beach no less, for a cruise around. Looking at the wares, to the beat off the African drums, it was Deans turn to be stoked when, of all the things, in all the places, a stall ... read more

Next stop was Hermanus and we took the Baz Bus which is a backpackers bus which stops at backpackers all around South Africa. We only took this bus a few times when local transport - which is much cheaper - seemed to be particularly difficult. Hermanus was a quaint seaside town with a nice place to stay. The weather was mild since summer was pretty much over but warm when the sun was out. We spent a few days in Hermanus relaxing after Capetown and also took a cage dive with the Great White Sharks. That was a great day out - we drove out to Gansbaii and then took a boat out about an hour from land. The captain then took a huge tuna head and attached it to a rope and threw it in ... read more
