First off I have a correction to make. I quoted gallons for gas which should have been liters. It was still reasonably priced but completely different. Sorry for the error.
Today we are headed off to the Winelands, in particular a place called Franschhoek. Along the way we stopped at St James Beach to take a picture of the colorful beach huts located on the beach. We have no idea why there are so many of these huts on the beach, maybe to store items, surf boards, or even rescue gear. There is a huge Surf School that was located across the street, and we saw about a hundred surfers braving the cold shark infested water. After taking a few pictures on St James Beach we headed north on the skirts of what is called the Cape Flats. This is an area that we were warned not to go through as it is probably the most dangerous of Cape Town. The Cape Flats is a very poor area of Cape Town and is what you would expect to see the poor communities of Africa to look like. Homes built out of old scrap metals, people walking everywhere barely in any
clothing and no shoes. Even though we were only on the outskirts of this area we could only imagine what the actual area looked like. In South Africa we noticed a huge difference in the class system. There is either extremely poor or extremely wealthy. Their middle class consists of retail, restaurants, or small business operators as we have learned. Even though pricing has been economical for us, the real estate seems to be the most expensive part about living in Cape Town.
After a short drive down the highway we were on our way to the Winelands. Along the way we decided to only stop at a few vineyards for some tastings. Partly because Jared prefers beer and we still had to drive to our destination. One of the Wineries that we stopped at was call La Motte. The wine was ok to say the least. It wasn't my favorite that i've had since being in Cape Town.
The Winelands in SA are comparable to what you would see in Napa or Sonoma just not as touristy and with gorgeous mountains in the back. Once we reached Mont Rochelle we knew Linda (Jared's mom) had made a
great recommendation. We were welcomed in and brought to their vast lawn area, where we were given cocktails. Our luggage was taken away and we sat down and took in our view. After enjoying our welcome cocktails, we were given a small tour of the property and facilities and then escorted to our room. We walked into our room and were in complete awe. The view of the mountains and the bathroom with heated floors, it was more than we could have hoped for. Everything was included too, including the mini bar and two bottles of wine! The lady explained to us that anything we wanted we could have. The mini bar was stocked with freshly baked snacks (all of which we packed). We even were able to take home a rubber ducky. We had dinner that evening at the hotel restaurant, just because it was convenient and we didn't want to leave. The meal was absolutely fantastic, they even decorated our table with rose pedals and champagne. A side note, alway tell hotels its your anniversary when you travel because you never know what type of free stuff you may get. For dinner Jared had line fish called King
Clip and I had the koran beef, we also both had scallop starters. The meal was to die for and the service was impeccable. Our bill came out to be $60 dollars so we decided to tip extremely well. When we were leaving, the wait staff came running out to catch us and thanked us profusely because it was such a large and much appreciated tip. We thought jeez we should have left more. Its really amazing that what seems like a small amount of money to us, can make a difference in a person's life. Mont Rochelle is a really amazing five star resort that we wished we had more time at. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need.
That evening we decided to call in room service for breakfast in bed. We knew that they offered a free continental breakfast upstairs but we didn't want to leave the room. The next morning sure enough, everything we wanted and a surprise of Mimosas!!!!!! We had breakfast on our lanai and took in the views, it was truly relaxing and romantic. When we went to check out, the breakfast we thought that
was going to cost us and arm and a leg was FREE!!!!. We should have ordered the whole menu. I would recommend this place to any honeymooner, or couple looking for a quiet relaxing getaway. It was out of this world!
As a side note we almost pulled a McMillan which consists of canceling and changing hotels at the last min, and tends to get a bit pricey. However in the end we spent our one night and left the next morning. 😞
