Our first full day in Cape Town was meant to involve going to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent most of his years in jail, but the tours had already been sold out when we checked online. Instead we pottered about the town, walking everywhere as for the simple reason that we could and it took longer than half an hour (Victoria, Mahe this isn't!).

A daytime view of Long Street revealed funky clothes shops, both new and second hand, a tattoo parlour, restaurants, coffee shops and bars, backpackers and hotels and shops selling African wares. Some of the buildings were old, with verandas up top ornately decorated and painted in vibrant colours. The vibe was low key and young with thriving independent shops, more Afflecks Palace/Oldham Street in Manchester or Brixton/Camberwell in London than chi chi King's road or King street. We stopped for a coffee on Greenmarket Square (oh how casual a treat) before stumbling upon the tourist information place.
