... read more

Hi Everybody! Here are some pics from Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens here in Cape Town. It didn't rain yesterday so we hopped on a bus and went to the Gardens. They are rated one of the top 7 botanical gardens in the world. It was so beautiful. Aaron was always telling me about a flower here called the Protea, now I know why. All sizes, colors, diffent types, they're amazing. Needless to say the birdlife there was cool, too. I can't imagine what it would look like in the summer, because it's winter here and everything is green and there are flowers blooming. Then we hopped back on the bus and rode it out to Hout Bay and had lunch at a great seafood place, of course the fish was caught that morning. It is so beautiful ... read more

Wow - the last two days have been amazing. Yesterday Kristabell and I took a tour through the Stallanbosch wine region and Pete went on a shark dive with the Great Whites at Hermanus Bay. Unfortunately due to poor weather Pete's tour got cancelled adn our wine tour got better as it was much better to be indoors drinking than out seeing the sites!!!! The wines were interesting. They have a variety unique to South Africa called Pinotage - a grafted blend of pinot noir and hermitage. A rough taste which I'm sure would issue the famous "You can shove your pinot" line from father dear. The sparkling wines were nice. Scenery was beautiful. Today the three of us took a tour down to the Cape of Good Hope, stopping on the way at Simon's Town, ... read more

sorry, this is the first time I'm on the internet long enough to enter a blog, so I'll have to back track a bit. Nov 25, flew from Buffalo airport--took the Megabus from Toronto--we were at the border crossing for 1.5 hrs! lucky my flight was much later. Nov 26, my cheap ticket included a 10 hour wait at Frankfurt so I went into town. the metro from the airport to downtown train station was only 3 stops! the transportation system is mind-blowingly organized, efficient and convenient (but super expensive). wondered around downtown Frankfurt & came completely by accident to the Frankfurt Market (food stalls on pedestrian streets) around Neue Krame. walked back along the Main river. that was really nice. wanted to explore more but got too cold. went back to the airport. Frankfurt airport ... read more

“Remember, remember, the 5th of November…”, begins a popular English tale celebrating the capture of the legendary Guy (Guido) Fawkes, who in 1605 attempted to blow up the House of Lords, Parliament with numerous barrels of gunpowder. The 5th of November is widely celebrated in the UK and all of her old colonies, including, here, in South Africa. After speaking to many people about why they celebrate the 5th of November here, many just respond with, “it’s a celebration for some guy who tried to blow up a building somewhere, and we get to light off fire works!” Although here in SA, this is a celebration lost in translation, it is, however, quite the spectacle. As you, back home, celebrated the historical win of Barak Obama with celebratory parties, we too celebrated the voting results, on ... read more

Hey there everyone- I'd like to first send all the love and thanks for all that you were whilst we were back home in SF; it was great and rejuvenating to see all of our peoples. We know that everyone's lives are hectic and we are thankful that you all took time outside of that crazy rat-race box to spend time with us. We totally love you all. Well, we made it back to Cape Town; all of us :Sarah, Kate, and I. Just in case some of you may not know, our friend, Kate (Marie's sister) has come out to join us in teaching and running It's Yoga Cape Town (our big-little yoga studio). Going back to the epic travel, after 35 hours in transit, 9 hours of it sleeping at Heathrow Airport in London ... read more

After several weeks of chilling temps, we were so excited to arrive in the hot sands of Africa. The descent into Cape Town was the most terrifying experience I've ever had on a plane. We were tossed back and forth by the wind as we approached the airport, and one final gust caused the plane to tilt violently to the left seconds before we hit the runway. I have no idea how the pilot managed to bring us in safely. We were assaulted with hailstones as we walked across the tarmac, and the winds were gusting over 80 kph. Our taxi driver was hilarious. When he learned that we were from DC, he launched into a monologue about all of his favorite rappers in the DC-Baltimore area. I recognized a few of the big names, but ... read more
