For the first time ever I am starting a planned overland truck tour. I'm more used to travelling solo with no plans, therefore able to change my mind whenever I feel like it. Very nervous that everyone will be quiet or a freak and I'll be stuck with them for 3 weeks with no escape.

Turns out, nothing to worry about, best trip ever!!! By the end we're a family.

There are 22 of us, with ages from 18 to 54, some single, some couples, 9 nationalities. Most of us end up with a nickname after a couple of days, which we finally get on a group t-shirt at the end.

Unfortunately I have not read the itinerary, and have already been to the District 6 museum twice and the townships once, still we have a good guide so learn a bit more this time. We visit Langa and have lunch in a local bar, mainly meat platters. Next stop a shopping centre, Sammy has filled the truck with food, we are buying snacks, drinks and booze. The truck has 24 lockers at the back, a freezer which is always powered by the truck, 2 cool boxes, mainly for booze, amplifier with ipod jack, 2 power strips for charging and 24 seats. Under the seating, outside the truck, are hatches for all of the food and cooking utensils, under that are the chairs and gas bottles. On the other side of the truck are the tents and sleeping mats, then at the back we have a cage for the barbq grill and fire wood. We come to know this layout pretty well after a few days.
Day 1 we stop in Sparky's for wine tasting and camping. It's an easy night as Sparky has cooked a potjie for us so all we need to do it wash our own plate afterwards. The wine tasting is excellent, I like almost every one, the roses are a little sweet though. Strangely we taste the roses after the red wine, but I'm assured that is the way to do it. We have 7 tastings of 50mls so are quite merry afterwards. We then continue to buy bottles for immediate drinking, including finishing off his port by the fire. And lucky that we did as it's a freezing cold night, I don't feel the cold at with my wine jacket on! There are 2 people to a tent so I share with Helena, luckily she doesn't hear my stumble in around midnight.
