March 15, 2013 (Cape Town, RSA) Today we started quite early to try and get to the meeting's 8 am sessions. Somehow our plans were dashed by the heavy traffic this morning, so we had a slow ride in to the convention center and missed some early talks. We are staying in Constantia, a suburb of Cape Town, and we drive in each morning with Dr. Pons who is staying about half a mile up the road with family. The weather here has been very different every day - this morning was overcast, low lying clouds and quite a bit cooler than yesterday. We had an early breakfast at the B&B and then spent a good hour in the car. We used the time to have many discussions with Dr. Pons or "Jono" as he's called. Reviewing what the goal of the work in Swaziland should be, how we can help him achieve that goal, and what the needs of the program are beyond the week we're here. We spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon at more sessions at the conference, and then left mid afternoon to take a water taxi from the convention center to the waterfront.
We spent a few hours there "helping" BKF shop, but mostly spending some time wandering around, people watching and then a coffee by the seaside. We headed back to the CTICC and met up with an ophthalmologist from the UK and his wife, and headed to the Royal Cape Town Yacht Club for dinner with Jono's dad and two of his children who are in University here in Cape Town (daughter in med school, son in chemical engineering). Then headed home tired and ready to crash.
I had some technical malfunctions today and any pictures from today are on BKF's camera and I think he fell asleep when he opened the door to his cottage. I have a few from my GoPro wide angle....I'll post some more tomorrow....promises, promises...
