This blog will hark back to earlier writings: “The Goat Story”-- about my first month at the homestay while I was in PST (Pre-Service Training), and “Recent Trials and Tribulations” and other blog descriptions of conditions in South Africa that I perceived as hindering my teaching. Animals and school conditions remain, but I must be learning to live with them, as the frustration levels have lessened since then. For example, today I was “hollered at” by a young man standing on the roof of a school building at Ndayi School. People communicate freely at the top of their lungs, music is ever-present from blocks away..competing music from 3 or 4 different homes... and I don’t mind it at all now. (However, I never initiate the hollering when I walk down the street, and, I savor the ... read more

More Touring SAI had 13 days in January with my daughters, Serena and Amanda, and 9 days in April with my friend Molly and her daughter, Hallie. We focussed on African wildlife...hoping to see all the BIG FIVE. (Rhinoceros, Water Buffalo, Lion, Elephant, Leopard) The leopard eluded us, but as you can see there were lots of other interesting species to watch. We barely saw a lion (or lioness) at Pilanesberg, but it was exciting. Driving through the park there, you must look out for other cars pulled over to the side of the road for possible sightings. People in 5 or 6 cars were looking out over a field of long grass; and we saw nothing. We waited patiently while a group of wildebeast walked through the field...then later one lonely wildebeast came along. He ... read more

9 April 2014 It’s Sunday night and I had a great day...taught Gr 12 Maths Lit at 9 am and followed that with the start of my art program. Then I came home, finished a Jack Reacher novel, my latest escapist literature, (Lee Child’s sentences are ¼ the length of Charles Dickens’ (my previous escapist literature) ....in fact Child doesn’t even use full sentences getting Reacher out of one impossible situation after another...but those impossible situations are fun to read about) ... then I called my Mom, heard about the snow in Seattle, and now I am writing this blog about the new school year and what it feels like to see “Close of Service” on this year’s calendar. I know I still need to write and post photos about touring South Africa during the 5 ... read more

Most photos are from my school in Kameelpoort (Molapoamogale) which is a small village. Sele School has 190 students in Gr 7-12. George's and Eva's schools are Gr 7-9 and much bigger. Eva's is in a densely populated region around our shopping village. The difference in size, location, and the personality of the principal makes our school situations different in some ways. But then they all face the same difficulties. For now, just take a look at photos and captions.... read more

Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve written... It is Term 3 already, it’s almost over in fact. Gr 12’s are working for their Trial Exams in all their learning areas this September so I am busy trying to cover all the Maths topics.I become incredibly tired by this point each term.I am considering extending my service so that I will be with my classes the entire school year of 2014 as well. End of year exams are in November each year. I have been here over a year now. Our SA26 groups will meet next month at Pretoria for our mid-service health/dental exams and additional training.Today our regional group of 6PCV’s (3 education, 3 health) are m... read more
