"Ladies and gentlemen, we are about to land in Johannesburg. Local time is 8:45am and ground temperature is seven degrees celsius..." What?!! Seven degrees celsius!!! Coming from almost 40 degree heat in Delhi, it was a shock to step off the plane only to be hit with a gust of icy wind. For the next day and a half, we froze to death in Johannesburg even whilst wearing 6 layers of clothing in the evening. We didn't do much apart from visit the local shopping centre. Wow! What a treat after India. Everything was unbelievably clean and orderly, no garbage, no-one trying to sell us mineral water or toilet rolls, but sadly no cows either! On our third day we finally left Johannesburg. We went by Baz Bus, a hop-on hop-off backpacker bus, mainly to avoid ... read more

Today was the day the first of the wedding guests would be arriving. Dave's parents, brothers and sister and a couple of friends flew into Kruger Airport in spite of the miserable wet weather. The next guests that were due were not so lucky. Barrie and Wendy and Rory and Dean had left Durban early morning to drive up. The weather was wet and windy, really miserable which made for a grim drive, but it took a turn for the worse when Wendy hit 2 potholes hidden by the water on the road and smashed 2 tyres. They phoned to arrange a tow truck but were told that it could only take one passenger - that left 3 of them in the middle of nowhere. We drove out to pick them up expecting to see Wendy ... read more

The hen party had been arranged by Kerry's bridesmaids at the News Cafe in Nelspruit. Word had been put around and we all met there, some of us a bit late to wait for the stranded Jo'burg guests to arrive, but we all got there eventually. The girls all had to dress up in their leopard print skirts and headbands and there were a few drinks sank. It was a really good evening and everyone enjoyed it. The stag night was held at the Keg, and again the turnout was good. Dave doesn't remember too much about it after the first hour or so although he was assured that he had a really good time. At the end of the night we had arranged for taxis to take everyone back but not enough taxis turned up. ... read more

Having finished all the celebrations it was time for some of us to go back to work (ugh) or move on to other areas for the rest of our holiday (that's better) and Andy and I with Kerry and Dave moved onto Nelspruit where the wedding was going to be to finalise matters. We had booked accommodation over the internet and I won't tell you what it was called as I am going to be quite scathing about it. We were booked into a 2 bedroomed chalet, and it wasn't particularly cheap, but it was disgustingly old fashioned, worn out, drab, dark and awful. We stayed the first night and tried to make the best of it. The next day I went and complained and they moved us to two single bedroom chalets instead. These were ... read more

Well what a week it's been! I can't quite believe it was only 7 days ago that I said goodbye to Mark, Mum, Dad and Katie at the airport. It's certainly been eventful. I am writing this in an internet cafe in Nelspruit having just dropped off Sally at the airport for the next leg of her adventure to Cape Town. Hopefully over the next couple of days I'll be able to master the art of uploading photos to the web...then you'll really all be bored! So in a nutshell...Sally, Mel, Paul, Dharsh and I all met at Jo'burg airport last Sunday morning after waiting ages in the longest ever immigration queue. I wouldn't have minded but the woman stamping my passport was so completely not bothered. We ended up all panicking that we would miss ... read more

With a group of students we went to South Afrika to learn about the bush from ranger Ed De trip was organized by Bushpackers in Hazyview (www.bushpackers.co.za), South Africa, close to the Kruger Nat. Well, we were in South Africa up until last night. I worked on the pictures on our way to the Johannesburg airport and had to leave the details until our arrival in Egypt. We are now in Luxor after a very long and exhausting journey. 4 hours of car to Joburg followed by waiting at the airport and a 7 hour night flight to Cairo!! Just shows you how huge Africa is! Once in Cairo we found out that our flight to leave in one hour (8am) was changed to 9pm!! Not good news for weary travellers! Anyway, we talked our way onto a noon flight and found a spot to squat until boarding. We are now in Luxor and have one night in a hotel before we get on our cruise down the Nile. ... read more

Howzit Bro? Greetings from South Africa! After a long flight it was excellent to sample the home comforts offered to us by the extended Isaacson family in Jo'Burg. So much so we were tempted to delay the first part of the trip and stay with Avril for longer! After some good sleep (we were tired after all the organization it took to leave London - ahhh bless I here you say) we decided to change plans before we had even started. We looked at a map and thought it was foolish to travel past the Kruger Park without actually getting off the bus. So that we did, and we blew our budget straight away by hiring a small car to get us into the park - incidentally it was a Toyota Tazz, a rather appropriate name ... read more
