This is my first message in a long time it seems. The last written explaination of life in SA was back in jefferey's bay, since then i made it to storms river, where i managed to pluck up the courage to do the worlds highest bunjee (caught on dvd so u can all have a laugh when i get home), more surfing down in Wilderness in the western cape, then a mixed time of too many late nights, idiotic moments where i let my gaurd down, and trying to experiance the beauty of a city within a mountain range. Cape town's experiance has confused me. I found myself once again questioning the whole idea of what i was there to do. Too many times i find myself in the early hours down long st. (main pub/bar ... read more

Ok, i in Nelspuit still, but just before i head off on a little adventure.. a trip within a trip one might say! Been in Nelspuit/kanyamazane for 4 weeks now.. and it has been interesting, however the reality of getting up at 5.30 every morning to go teach in school is now starting to drag a little to be honest! its time for a little more, holiday/travel type experience, so im planning a month long trip around South Africa starting in Jo'burg tomorrow! Sitting on the balcony of my African family home this morning, after a tremendous thunderstorm last night, got me thinking about the strangeness of travel, and its ups and downs! when i first got here... people talk about a honeymoon period of extended travel, where you feel great about everything and cannot get ... read more

Ok people, this is my second proper blog... it really is a run-about to get to internet properly.. but i,m here now! So still in the Township of Kanyamazane, its stilll bloody hot, and im still 'volunteering' in the school! i think i said before how many similarities there are with Mansfield... guess kids are kids and the fun and joveality of school life is universal!!!! And in reply to anne-marie, i think ofstead would have a field-day... but thats the least of the schools problems! But it is interesting, trying to get the kids to understand what im on about is a challenge itself, never mind trying to teach 'life orientation' and the meaning behind stereotypes, biased and discrimination!!!! My SiSwati is struggling i have to say.... i think by now iv'e learnt that Make ... read more

Ok, hello everyone that is viewing! This is my first opportunity to get on this and write so its an exciting time for me! I have been in South Africa for over a week now, and its thrown up quite a few experiances. I am staying at the moment in a township/former township called Kanyamzani, in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The family i am staying with have been so helpful, welcoming me, looking after me etc... Its such a strange place however, totally different to anything i have experianced before! Its such a strange feeling to be so apprehensive about walking down the street... going to the shops, as they warn me it can be quite dangerous, if your not careful! But the people are friendly whn i meet them, its just also hard ... read more

Bush Telegraph day 4 I think the word I have been trying to find to describe this feeling of awe and wonder is RESPECT. When you are faced with an Elephant so huge that if I was to stand I would only reach its knee, or you come within 4 feet of a leopard knowing full well that if you went only another centimetre closer, it would finish you off in a matter of seconds, you start to realise……who really does run this planet???? If you were to ask me that right now I would tell you it was in no uncertain terms THE MONKEYS!!! Yesterday not an hour after I had written my blog, the SAME monkey stole my muffin!!!!! I even managed to get a picture of the little bugger hanging onto it for ... read more

We finally have internet. We are staying in White River South Africa, at http://www.heuglins.co.za/accommodation.htm (cut and paste into your browser to see an excellent accomodation). We will be heading home tonight, have a 10 hour flight to Amsterdam, 3 hour layover, and 10 hours to Seattle. We had an exciting visit to Kruger National Park yesterday, that started with part of our group being in a car accident caused by the driver of their vehicle trying to avoid a dog crossing the street. Minor injuries, and our Rotarian friends found other friends to take us on the tour. We will post more pictures of our successful mission in Lesotho, but for now, we have posted a sampling of pictures of our past 9 days. Rick and Kathleen... read more

The guy jumps out behind a wall as I walk through the parking lot on a stop made through Neilspruit on our way from Joburg to Mozambique. "Gimme your bag." My eyebrows come together on my forehead in that way to say "Areyoufuckingkiddingme?" "Gimme your bag," and he pulls out a gun. "Ohshithappyto." It was over before it even began. "MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" screams over and over in my head. Everything. My shiny white mac, my fat Nikon SLR with lens, my Canon digital compact, my only cash in EUR, copies of my passport, credit cards, ATM cards, everything. My phone, all my phone numbers with it. He even has my PADI certification cards and my yellow fever vaccination certificate. My HSBC bank security token, so now I can't even check for movements in my accounts. All my ... read more
