Hi all, OK, so I guess I'd better tell you a little about the volunteer work we're doing and the lectures - this week has been more ordered and we've got down to more of a work pattern as a lot of people left this week so they were fitting all the trips in last week! The usual pattern of the day is to get up and do a couple of hours work from 7.30am. We've been helping to collect sand to help Uncle Tinus build his house (he lives at the camp and I actually have his roundowel now and he's sleeping in the house - feel bad kicking an 82 year old out!), been filling the eroded ground up with leaves, twigs etc. to help build it up to the level of the rest ... read more

The weekends at camp can become very wild indeed, and this weekend was to be no different except that this weekend started on Thursday evening. After packing for a weekend away Myself, Mel, Nicola, Chris, Andrea and T travelled about 45 minutes outside Hoedspruit with Adele & Bee. We were going to spend some time in a private lodge by the river. So once we arrived and shown to our rooms it was time to unpack the cooler box and enjoy a nice cool beer whilst watching the river pass by us. After a few beers I was introduced to a beautiful young lady called Jessica. We spent quiet abit of time together over the next couple of hours and after abit of time we became very close. At one stage I was giving her a ... read more

We went on Thursday evening at about 4pm to see Jessica the Hippo, who is a human friendly Hippo. This is because when she was born there was a big flood and when she was only a couple of hours old she was swept away from her mother and the people who look after here found her on their doorstep the next morning. So they took her in and have looked after her ever since. They have the river just outside their house and Jessica is not caged in she is free to leave if she likes but she likes living there. She does get spoilt though, she gets feed and gets here own mattress too sleep on!! So when we arrived we were shown the house where we would stay for the night a ... read more

Lets start from the very begining It just dawned on me, that all i have told you about are all the fun things that i have been up to since arriving in this fantastic part of South Africa. There is a serious side to the reason way i have chosen to sent 2 months on this project. First its is a conservation project to learn about the african bush and its wildlife, including not just the amazing animals, but also the plants, insects and weather systems that play an important part in a very fragile eco-system that me, you and the rest of the population are bit by bit disturing for the rest of the planet. Over the next 8 weeks i will be involved in some project work that will include removing snare traps ... read more

Our big posh Game drive. We were given the option of doing a proper game drive around the Baule game reserve and it only cost us 100R each which isn't bad for 5 hours driving and stop for alcholic drinks and nibbles! So we had 2 very funny guys pick us up and off we went. They did a short drive round and then they had heard of a lion kill that was 2 days old, it was a giraffe and the lions were still around feeding on it. So off we went to have a look, how amazing we were able to see some lions with full belly's just lying down and relaxing and we got to park up next to some feeding on the kill!!!!! We stayed and watched them for about 2 hours ... read more

Was a great trip, here is what we did. We had the option of doing a trip with the company we are staying with to the Kruger Park but we felt that we would like to spend more than a day in the Kruger. So with the help of on of the people who run the course-Tisha, we arranged a 3 day trip to the Kruger for 3 of us. Tisha arranged the rental of a car for us and accomodation at some friends of hers in Whiteriver, we did want to stay in the Kruger but all the camps where fully booked. There was one girl Tee with us who can't drive and then Susanne and I. I drove on the roads outside of the park and in the park and Susanne only drove in ... read more

Hiking down the Manoutsa Mountain Today was gonna be one for them days that would blow my head away with the sights and sounds of the south African country side, and it did in more ways than one. After about an hours drive towards the mountain range the scale of the mountains was incredible, the size, colours of the rocks and the greenery of the trees will remain with me forever. It was a complete contrast to the African bush that has been home for the past week. First stop was at a road side cafe were we stopped for refreshments and for the owner of the cafe to drive us to the stop point. He then dropped us all off and then drove the jeep to the pick up point. Just before we started ... read more

Ok let me explain that. Slept in my bed the first night, second night was in the bush ( no pun intended) third night was on the look out tower, forth was in my bed, fifth was in town after a night out, sixth was on the look out tower. So much was happened in the past week i'm starting to find it hard to remember what days i've done what. Had a great night in town on friday evening. went for a meal in the Sleepers Restuarant in town and had Ostrich kababs and were very nice. Then a group of us then went to an opening of a new cocoktail bar in the town and were entertained by a great new singer who is very big in south Africa. Then of to the local ... read more
