After a six hour drive from Jburg... We arrived in Ballito, known as the Dolphin Coast! Well I was pretty much breathless on arrival, looking at a very fine surf spot. Balitto has a magnificently paved walkway that stretches right along the beach, great for a early morning run (although I did that all of twice - but it makes you feel like a million bucks!). We were staying right on the beachfront in a wicked beachhouse, with all the trimmings. Early morning to lunch was spent on the beach (sun was blindly hot at 8:30am) and afternoons usually spent exploring the surrounding sites. There was a very cool beach pub called - hops about 5 minutes walk from the beachhouse... talk about ideal. The highlights of the ballito holiday were: * Visiting all the surrounding ... read more

Great to be back in the big smoke after almost two weeks in the wild Wild Coast! I dont know what was our top priority, a long hot shower, a good coffee, a proper toilet to sit on or any of the handful of luxuries that you never think about 'til you don't have them. In the end washing our stinky clothes before they deserted us for other, cleaner travellers won out. And although we almost had to make them ourselves we found a small cafe with good coffee. Formalities out of the way we spent the next three days exploring every nook and cranny of what we soon discovered to be a very big, busy, vibrant and electric city. Like our beloved Sydney, Durban is a very multicultural city and boasts the largest Indian population ... read more

As the crucial Superbru Round 9 approaches and with the Tri-Nations on the horizon, elite members of the Beertjie Brigade (BB) are preparing for team extraction to South east Asia on a secret mission. Mission status: Team Ready Extraction Date: Thursday 13 April at 1300 hours. Team Members: Chewy, Beertjie, Nicns. Accompanying this elite team is specialist operations assessor George "Crocodile" Morfou. The BB is hoping George's Turkish decent will come in handy while scouting frontier islands of Muslim Malaysia. Our Mission: To find the Springbok's next flyhalf...and to recover from early round pressures of the Superbru challenge. We will start in Southern China and head East to Bangkok and down to Kuala Limpur. We expect a tough journey made more difficult by Beertjie's phobia for harmless insects, George's infatuation with oriental ... read more

We travelled about 2 hrs in the truck to go and teach at this Catholic mission station called Mariazell High School. We didn't know what to expect, what we'd be teaching or how long we'd be there for - you kinda have to go with the flow in Africa - I am learning! When we arrived we had a tour of the place (it's up in the mountains - with breathtaking views and awesome sunsets ans sunrises - which i saw out of my bedroom window each morning!) and met the lady who we'd be staying with who taught at the school. She was called Beryce and guess where she was from - Colchester! how bizarre! However, she insisted she was from New Zealand cos she had lived there for 4 years before coming to SA. ... read more

ADVANCE WARNING- THERE ARE NO PHOTOS ON THIS UPDATE AS THE DISC WOULDN'T WORK IN THE COMPUTER I AM USING. SORRY. NOW READ ON (IF YOU CAN BE BOTHERED)... We are no longer in Australia. The observant amongst you (or those who know our itinerary) will see that this update is brought to you from the southern part of the African continent. Yes, we are now in South Africa, over half way in to our journey from Cape Town to Joburgand about three weeks away from flying back to London. But let's not dwell on such maudlin thoughts. We made it to Monkey Mia. And we saw plenty of dolphins. The set up there is a bit of a circus, but still, seeing the dolphins in such close proximity was worth it. Mia also had the ... read more

Met these people called Matt and Kristy who run a youth camp where kids of all ages can come. so Kelly and i decided to help out for a few days. We had such a laugh. It's on this farm about 1hr from where we're staying so this guy that we met, Dave, lent us his dirty as truck and we trundled down dirt roads to get to this camp. We helped with cooking most of the time but we also went hiking (hard core!!) up to Die Kroon (which is the main mountain) and also got to canoe and cat walk (this is where a log is tied to 2 trees high up that you walk across and then absiele down) this was a little scary but heaps of fun. the kids on the camp ... read more

Well about a week ago we flew to Durban way over on the other side of SA on the east coast where we drove about 3 hrs inland to Johans's bro's farm, this was like 10hrs travelling in 1 day so we were pretty tired. this place is in great contrast to where we were on the west coast, green, hilly, misty with dirt roads and no houses for miles around. Andrew and Dierdre were going on holiday for 5 days so Kelly and i were staying in their thatched guest cottage (so quaint) whilst they were away. Everyday we were like this is so bizarre we're in the middle of nowhere on a farm where the people who live here aren't even here...it was just a funny few days where we were like 'doodeedo' what ... read more

After leaving J'bay and all its lovely surfers umm.... I headed to Port St John which is this stunning little place with a lagoon and jungle behind the beach. Beautiful. Got a wicked reaction when I arrived, "A Reading shirt in the Transkei?" (Tanskei is like the middle of nowhere for those who don't know.) fella couldn't get his head around it. Just spreading the R'z vibe. Just moched on the beach and chilled out in prepration for the Warner Beach experience ;-) Warner is were I did my Scuba and had the most rocking ... read more

Hello, Well being as I'm in the middle of my two intense weeks of school, I won't write for too long, but I wanted to go ahead and post some pictures from my weekend in the drakensberg. It was AWESOME the weather was beautiful, the people we hiked with were great. We slept in a cave behind a waterfall, which was just ridiculous. All around great time. HIking is taken a bit more loosely here, and after being on the trail for several hours, we decided to up and leave the trail, which meant crossing rivers on hands and knees and climbing up the sides of hills by grabbing onto grasses and holding on for dear life. It was an experience. I'll be back there for sure. In fact, there is a great music festival in ... read more

I have officially purchased my first car. If this was a test of whether I am grown up or not, I would get like the status of an 8 year old. I think my preferred mode of transport may be bike with training wheels. Having not even had a car for 5 years, nevermind knowing a single thing about what is imperative to a good car, I sat down last week with the classifieds to discover the perfect car for me. Fat chance. Everyone manages to make their car sound wonderful in the classifieds, and seeing as my requirements were "works" and well, "works", I was not doing myself any favors in narrowing down my choices. With that in mind I recruited my wonderful roommate Greg to take me to the Durban Drive-In, where people sell ... read more
