Johannesburg is one of those places that has many assumptions and generalisations surrounding it. These assumptions are commonly made by those people who haven't actually visited the city, but who feel they should spread the word about what they've heard. Unfortunately most of the things these people have heard, are bad. I learnt this interesting point of fact before I arrived here in South Africa as I was warned by many of my closest friends and family about the dangers that await me in Joburg (Johannesburg). Of course I was told about all the crime and corruption that happens here. I was told that I'll land myself in trouble if I choose to travel to this country. I was also told that the country was extremely poor, having no clean water or electricity and that most ... read more

Had an extremely interesting conversation with some local girls I made friends with a few nights ago. We spent the evening discussing a form of medicine which I thought was no longer practiced on Earth - how wrong of me! According to google and it's reliable Wikipedia, witchcraft is the use of magical faculties and has been around since the earliest human cultures. Witchcraft is taken very seriously here. I was told that an educated, western doctor will step aside in the corridor of a hospital if a witch-doctor was to pass. According to locals here, if you truly want to harm someone or bring bad luck to someone, you must approach a witchdoctor and request a spell or potion to do so. Stemming from the devil and his power, witches are wives of Satan and ... read more

From the previous entry: “From Nasca the road went on to Lima, where we arrived fairly early in the afternoon but had to spend a good time looking for a decent priced hotel.” Lima proved to be the end-station for us in South America. At least as far as our traveling is concerned; not the end of our troubles though. After all the things I didn´t like about South America: the rain, the insects but above all the corruption, thieving and fault-finding, the pettiness and intolerance, topped by the sheer indifference and incompetence of forwarding personnel to get our car into a container and send it off to Durban. I´ll come back to that. But before I do, I must admit we saw interesting and beautiful things as well and we look back at fabulous experiences. ... read more

Geo: -26.153, 27.8657This afternoon Paul and I went to the local botanical gardens for a quick visit. There wasn't anything interesting to see at the hide, so we walked around the garden. I spotted a tortoise and we watched it as it walked towards us and then through the grass. On our way out of the gardens we stopped in at the hide again in case some birds had appeared. We sat here for a little while and watched a male Southern Yellow Masked Weaver hang from its nest and make some adjustments to it with its beak. ... read more

Geo: -26.0863, 27.8398We were in Johannesburg for our leave from work and late this afternoon Paul and I decided to go to the Botanical Gardens. We sat at the hide which overlooked Sasol Dam for about an hour. There wasn't a lot to see, except for a couple of yellow weavers and a red bishop. I managed to get quite a bit of reading and Sudoku done this afternoon.... read more

Geo: -26.1625, 27.8725Today we went for a walk among the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. The gardens are next to the estate, which is handy and we don't have to pay an entrance fee as we have our own key. Firstly we went and sat in the hide which overlooks the dam. When it stopped raining, we continued our walk in the gardens. Here we saw quite a few tortoises wandering around and the Witpoortjie Waterfall.... read more

Geo: -26.153, 27.8657This morning I met Paul's friend Lindin, who came over for a visit. We were all called outside by Paul's parents to see something strange. It was called a 'sundog'. It looked like a double round rainbow that went around the sun. It was an amazing sight. I had never seen one before. At first the rainbow colours were quite bright and then it slowly faded. We had a look on the internet and the TV. The news reports were calling it an infrequent phenomenon. It was only visible in Johannesburg. People who were interviewed on the TV gave a variety of responses to their interpretation of its appearance. The three of us then went for a drive to one of the ponds in the estate. Here we saw water lilies, many tadpoles, Red ... read more

Geo: -26.153, 27.8657Early this morning we went back to the botanical gardens. Firstly we stopped at the hide. From here we saw quite a few Red Bishops that were mostly puffing their feathers out. There were also Masked Weavers flying about. Half an hour later we left the hide and went for a walk in the direction of the waterfall. We walked through the picturesque gardens. This morning I was on the lookout for the giant tortoises that I saw yesterday. I then spotted a pair. One was slightly smaller than the other one. I followed them as they slowly walked away from me. I decided to walk away from them. In the little pond I spotted some frogs and a terrapin swimming around, its head popped out among the moss. I took some time to photograph ... read more
