Last night tamz told us if it was still raining we wouldn't have to be up on time, we could all come to the restaurant at 730 to feed because we wouldn't be able to walk anyone so it wouldn't take as long. I was on lions today and of course the lions and tigers switched enclosures as usual so we had to harness the tigers and walk them down to their enclosure. They are so terrified if the electric fence that we had to turn it off and lure them with their bottles. After that was done, my group and I went in with the lions. No raking or changing the water today just picking up poop which someone else did. All the sanctuary animals were done too so we just went up to breakfast. I had toast with scrambled eggs and "tomato sauce" aka ketchup.
Unfortunately when you are taking care of lions, you have to do meat prep so we walked down to the fridge and got out two cow legs. The smell was just atrocious. Think of the dump and multiply that smell by 100. With the cow legs you have to cut them into
two at the joint which means you have to cut through to the knee and then cut the joint and separate the pieces. The three halves and the older lion and tiger good at nighttime and then you cut up the forth half into small chunks for the rest of the animals. By the time you get to this point the smell doesn't even phase you anymore unfortunately. All we have to do is really follow the board, we don't have to remember what everyone gets because its always changing. While Pascal was working on splitting one leg, I worked on making the steaks and the small chunks for the others and the knives are just pieces of crap so it is that much harder. I had to skin it first and then get the meat off. I legit cut it down to the bone and we were still short meat so Pascal had to grab some more from the fridge which brought a whole new wave of smells into the area. The third person helping us could not deal with the smell so she had to sit outside the whole time.
After meat prep was over, we just
went up to the restaurant and sat around all day, it was quite boring but there were hardly any tourist and I probably did like 1 or 2 handlings. Nothing major. Because of the rain, I still couldn't go in there for play time. Of course when it came time for feeding time, the babies wouldn't listen to us and they made it into a project. But finally we got them right and fed them and then went on to feed ourselves. However, I did see an AWESOME rainbow during the day, it was so huge!! I couldn't even take a picture of the whole thing, I had to take a video to get it all. I could even see the end of it! I joked with guy Ashley who is also a redhead that wwe had to go down there and find the gold because we had the luck o the Irish, but we didn't go 😞
I had a grilled cheese for dinner, but little did I know we were going to have a braai, or BBQ, at the communal cabin and Ashley and Josh were coming. Oh it was great fun, the food was good, even
though I didn't really have that much and the company was good. They build the fire but it was still sprinkling a little bit so it wasn't very good so they went out and bought petrol aka gas and then slowly but surely poured cupfuls onto the fire. When he did it roared to much! But it kept us nice and toasty. Also special about this night is that I had my first full alcoholic drink ahah, it was just a wine cooler but it was pretty good. Then I had a pina coolada which was wicked good. Earlier in the day, Ashley was teaching us how to make glasses out of alcohol bottles, which kept us occupied for like a good half hour, he would score the glass then put it under hot water until it broke and then sand paper it down. So Ashley and I decided that we would make a glass from my first drink. Everyone thought it was cool but laughed because they couldn't remember what their first drink was. At one point, girl Ashley was ttrying to show us how she makes bottles into glasses, because she ties an acetone soaked string around the
bottle and lits it on fire and then soaks it under water. While drunk, Josh had the brilliant idea to pour acetone on his pants. He almost lit it on fire but we finally convinced him not to, but he really couldn't understand why it was a bad idea, he thought it would just burn off....
Finally, I ended the night with a skype date with my lovely sister Vicki and Matt 😊 Although, there was nothing much new to tell them because they always read my blog...After skype we lost internet, which is precisely why all of these are so late! My apologies! 😊
