One of the volunteers is a Masseuse and Josh wanted a massage When you are on tigers, you have to be at the restaurant by 7 instead of 730 because the tigers need to be walked. I have yet to walk anyone because the weather is so crappy, and guess what! today was no exception. Instead we just picked up bones and poop and fed them their ribs. Today we were told to rake the enclosure and bury the leaves like in the lion enclosure. Well let me tell you, tigers love holes. Judah was so amazed by the whole we dug, he wouldn't leave it alone and we weren't able to finish. It was frustrating but he's just so cute you can't get upset! One of the good things about being on tigers is that you get to bottle feed them in the morning and at night. Today I fed Amber, you need to make sure its hers because her bottle is special since she is still getting medicine from when she was sick. But it seems to be working so that's really good. I was so worried about her when she got sick!
After my breakfast of rice krispies, we had to repaint this shelving unit for project time. We
couldn't have anything outside because of the weather, but hey, that works for me. The shelf will end up being for geckos, theres also another one that will be full of snakes soon. This particular shelving unit was all set up with all the wiring and the bolts that were in the wall at the previous place, so before we could do anything, we had to first strip off all the wiring and lighting. We were working with tools that we shouldn't have because we didn't have access to the right ones, so it took wayyy longer than it should have! There were like 3 of us really working on it. I don't know where everyone else had gone, but it wasn't hard work so I'm not complaining. There was this one stupid nail that did not want to come out though, I had to spend like a good 5 minutes working on it. :P
After that was over, it was time to paint, but there were only 2 good paintbrushes because no one ever washed them from the last time. We soaked the other two in hot water but they never loosened up. Since I couldn't do anything
because of the lack of paintbrushes, I went in with the lions. Then out of nowhere there were like 5 handling in a row. By the time we were finished with the handlings we were late for lunch. There was no lunch left because people had gone up for seconds when there were like 4 of us who hadn't had any yet. Instead we all made ourselves a sandwich with creamcheese, cheese, ham, carrots, cucumbers and lettuce. It sounds really weird and as I was putting it all on, I was thinking, this is going to be disgusting. But it actually wasn't half bad, so yay for Tamz for telling us what to put on it.
After lunch it was animal time. I was kinda done with the lions, because I had just done so many handlings, and I didn't feel like finding people to go into the other enclosures so I went down to shadows and watched Melissa work with him. Melissa is an intern here and she has been working with Shadow the black leopard as her main project. She's done really well, he's well behaved and so stinkin adorable. As I was watching them, a handling came along. It was a couple, but only the wife was going in so I sat and talked to the man. He was excited for me about volunteering there. As it turns out, he lives in England but he lived in CT for some time, so when I said I was from RI he goes, well I hope I would know where that is! A lot of the people who come to visit here are so nice and friendly and cool to chat with. Everyone has a different story and I've been meeting people from all around the world which is just really cool.
Feeding went nice and smooth today because we are feeding the lions and tigers separate until Amber is better. I didn't really eat anything for dinner today because we were having a braii. So a bunch of us drove down in the back of Delano's truck. I went and got changed, grabbed a drink and watched the boys light the fire. Delano was surprisingly good at it and we had a fire immediately, and then he got another fire going to warm the charcoal. By the time everyone else arrived down at the cabins, the fires were going and everything was good. It was pretty funny to have Tamz and Delano there with us, and someone had brought down a big bowl of fries from the kitchen so we were all munching on those. As the night went on people got progressively more drunk, which made it quite entertaining. We have a Kudu horn, which is basically this really big round horn that we have for the drinking challenge. I did not take part in this but it was hilarious to watch. Someone pours two cans of beer down it while the other person kneels and drinks it all. Jacob and Josh only finished about one beer before spilling the rest, but Delano was really good at it, he's had too much practice. There were also some party tricks going on, where the guy does a fireman lift to the girl and she has to climb to the front of him without touching the floor. It was actually pretty funny because Tamz and Delano are dating and Delano told one of the volunteers they had to try it because she kept talking about it, so she asked Tamz if she could have permission to do a trick that involved being near Delano's crotch region. Once she knew how to do it, Tamz decided to give it a try, but man does she have to practice that when she's sober. We also had a little step show which was pretty cool because the new volunteer that Ashley knew, she knew because she had taught his frat how to do the step routine, so they did it live for us.
Everyone thought that because I don't drink, I would get drunk really fast, but they didn't take into account my size, so they were all telling me I was drunk just because I was being my normal loud self, which I tone down here because there are already so many loud people. To prove them all wrong I recited the alphabet backwards. I missed a letter, but not bad for a person with 4 drinks in her. It was all around a good night 😊
