Weil die Straße ... read more

Each of the last few days, I have thought “there’s not much today”, and each day has been full of activity and emotion. Our day started with driving into the Karoo. I had mistakenly thought the Great Karoo was a desert, but it is a semi-arid climate, similar to southern Alberta or, to our American companions, Arizona. The trees disappeared, except where planted around farmhouses, and “rhino grass”, a tough little bush, took over the landscape. Small hills dot the land that once was an inland sea. The conical mountains, so like the Lesotho hats, were built by underwater volcanoes during Earth’s Gondwana phase (before the current continents). (This we learned in the evening but saw clearly in the daytime.) The Karoo is borde... read more

Barbara & John in the Garden Route, Graaff Reinet and North East Highlands of the Eastern Cape This newsletter covers nearly two weeks of diverse areas and has to say the least been a little tiring, but apart from one day, it has been absorbing and fascinating. Our period in the Garden route commenced at the western end, in Mossel Bay. The weather here was misty and cloudy but warm. Our apartment was large and had a great view of the harbour and ocean. We spent 2 days here, one on the beach, where I got sunburnt and the other touring many of the beaches up to and including Wilderness. The area is a popular tourist spot and so the beaches are generally pretty good, our preference being Herold’s Bay and Victoria Bay, which are both ... read more

Last weekend was quite nice because I had a new traveling partner! Bill arrived in Johannesburg on Thursday evening and then in PE on Friday morning (a little late) and after some breakfast we set out on our weekend tour. I took Friday, Monday, and Tuesday off of school and we drove almost 1,000 km around the Eastern Cape Karoo. With Bill as my navigator we headed off Northwest toward Graaff-Reinet. We arrived in the afternoon, hit up the information office, got some maps and checked in to a B&B. Then, about 3:30 we set off up toward the Valley of Desolation in the Camdeboo National Park. You drive in the park and up to the Valley. There are a couple of places on the way up to take beautiful pictures and check out the scenery. ... read more

So Thursday morning we set off heading for the small village in the Karoo called Nieu Bethesda. I had been told about the place by Andrea in Pietermaritzberg and during a conversation he had told me that the Karoo is his favourite place in all of South Africa and that if I headed that way I should stay at the Owl House Backpackers in Nieu Bethesda. So when I met up with Paula I told her that we were going to be doing a diversion for a couple of days but she was more than happy to join me for the ride. Initially our route took us north and we motored through Somerset East where we witnessed what seemed to be a peaceful protest outside the local butchers. There was a gathering of people holding up ... read more
