9 weeks in Ethiopia = need for a vacation So, my boyfriend and I decided to head overland to Somaliland. First stop - Hargesia. I remember most of this trip in terms of comparisons to Ethiopia where we had been for the 7 weeks prior. So take this perspective within that context. Here are the logistics - First off you will need dollars for this trip. There are no ATMs in Somaliland. Therefore, if you need money while there it will be a transfer. If you must take care of this while in Ethiopia, we came to realize that the only place you change birr to dollars are the Dashen Banks. And if you are getting money out of the ATM - keep your receipt. This is a difficult process, and Ethiopia takes it seriously. We ... read more

Shortly after leaving Oman we started across the infamous Gulf of Aden, home to the world’s most active pirate fleet. Regent went to great lengths to assure a safe passage for her flagship, the Voyager, and her boat load of passengers and crew. First off the ship was equipped with an LRAD---long range acoustic device---which when activated directs an ear shattering cone of noise at a target. This device was used by the Seabourn Spirit in 2005 to deter a Somali pirate attack. The LRAD was attached to the aft railing of the ship behind the Horizon Lounge—right where we have our parties. Next, four young Israeli security guards were brought on board for the transit. The ship’s regular security forces are Gurkhas. These Nepalese men are renowned for their fierce fighting ability and have been ... read more

Somalia-Pirates!! (THE PICTURE TO THE RIGHT IS NOT ONE THAT I TOOK, I COPIED IT FROM THE INTERNET SO YOU COULD SEE WHAT THE PIRATES LOOK LIKE) Yes, if you look at the Spot Tracker, you will see that we are very, very close to the coast of Somalia where today's modern pirates live and ply their trade of hi-jacking ships and holding them and their crews and cargos hostage for ransom. Are we scared?? No-no-no! We have the Coalition countries? naval ships and their helicopters watching out for and over us. They were here with us this morning when we woke up and they are still here this evening. They will be with us until we enter the Suez Canal in a couple of days. So, yes there are pirates nearby, but they aren't any ... read more

"You are from Britain. You are welcome. You are my brother. This is your second home!" Abdul (also known as Little King Kong). Somaliland (Somali: Soomaaliland) is a de facto independent republic located in the Horn of Africa. The Republic of Somaliland considers itself to be the successor state of the former British Somaliland protectorate, which had an area of about 176,210 square kilometres (68,040 sq mi), which became independent on June 26, 1960, and united with Italian Somaliland five days later to form the Somali Republic. On May 18, 1991, the people of Somaliland declared independence from Somalia. However, it was not recognized by any other country or international organization. (Wikipedia) I was made to feel welcome in Somaliland, even if I sometimes felt like the centre ... read more

Hargeisa is the main city and capital of Somaliland. Unlike the coastal towns, such as Berbera and Zeilah, which are at least 2,000 years old, Hargeisa is a new town. Before it was made the capital of the British Protectorate of Somaliland in the 1920s, Hargeisa used to be a caravan stop between the high plateau and the coastal towns. Its main attribute then was the availability of water from the bed of its river (wadi), which is dry except in rainy weather. The wadi is locally known as 'maroodi-jeeh' (elephant digs), as elephants used to dig holes in its middle to get to the water in the dry season. (Unluckily, the elephants have long vanished in this corner of the world.) The town went through rapid development up to the 1988 when it was ... read more

Because of the mountains, the country is full of wadis (sandy rivers that are dry for most of the time except when it rains); however, after the rains some have flowing streams for a while; and that is the perfect time to camp around one. The sandy beaches of the wadis are like the sea bleaches - even finer sometimes, and take a dip in the fresh stream or pools. Just watch out for signs of rain and a torrent coming from up river. Plus if you have a hand for prospecting, you can search through sands of the wadi and maybe you will find a precious stone - an emerald, an opal, etc.. This country certainly has a precious stone.... read more

Sheikh Mountain are part of the Golis Chain that stretches along the length of Somaliland. Sheikh is a small town atop the Sheikh Mountains, and to get there you take the Sheikh Pass. The veiw from the Sheikh Pass is spectular, as the mountains cascade into the horizon. Sheikh is also home to the Sheikh Secondary School, the Eaton of Somaliland. Sheikh mountain (about 2,000 metres above sea level) is also a natural wonder by its vegetation; as it receives more rainful than the surrounding the areas, the mountain is well wooded, and many of the plants may be unique. Unluckily there it is not nature reserve, which it should be... read more

Berbera is about 200 miles or so away from Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland; more importantly, it may be the oldest town on this side of the African Red Sea/Gulf of Aden. It was visited by a Greek sailor-merchant in the first century AD, as is told in the Periplus of the Red Sea. I did not see much of the city's ruins or old buildings; I went to see the beach, where I spent a lot of time. The beaches are beautiful but were empty, except for a few youngsters taking a dip in the sea. It seems that few tourists ever venture into this country. But would that a wonder, when this country, termed as Africa's Best Kept Secret, for its stability and peace, is often confused with Somalia proper.... read more

What is a gerenuk? According to American Heritage Dictionary, a gerenuk is "An African gazelle (Litocranius walleri) having long legs, a long slender neck, and backward-curving horns in the male." The Word itself is from the Somali language. This is Somaliland -- the land of the gerenuks. It is also my birthplace, a place from which I had been absent for most my adult life, and to which I have returned now. So I am not actually a passing traveller, but more like a returnee, more like a sailor visiting his home port. I am in Hargeisa, Somaliland. Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991, after a tumultuous union dating to 1960. Before Somaliland was a British Protectorate, until it became independent in June 1960; joined Somalia in the same year. One of things I like ... read more

The Horn of Africa. The self-declared and officially non-existent Republic of Somaliland, occupying the northernmost part of the fictitious country of Somalia. For some reason the word “warlord” pops up in my head when I hear “Somali”. Somali Warlord. Like Apple Pie. Images of brave marines killing hundreds of skinnies for every one they lose. The overwhelming and irresistible firepower of Democracy. Black Hawk Down. When I told him where I was headed my brother asked me if it was possible to find a more dangerous place. As people you meet on the street will tell you, there are 5 parts to Somalia: Djibouti - the French “Department”, the Ogaden region in Ethiopia, a part of Kenya, Somalia proper - formerly an Italian colony and now further divided into the mini-state of Puntland (there is no ... read more
