Jeg spurgte ham om man skulle gå langt for at komme hen til helikopteren der transportere en ind til selve Freetown. ”Ohh, the two helicopters has been grounded. You see the motor broke down in one of them and the other occationaly spit fire, so’ll you have to take the ferry.” Aha, jeg havde hørt historier om hvordan ingen ellers tog den færge, og jeg forstod godt hvorfor da jeg stod på dækket af noget der lignede en kasseret færge der i sin tid sagtens kunne have sejlet mellem fastland og en eller anden lille ø i Danmark. A few days after Christmas , I left Conakry with Michelle, Tony, Camilo, and Jen. We left the PC house at 6 am to walk to the main road where we could find a taxi. The taxi took us to the Freetown gare in Matam, where we reserved five seats in a 9-place taxi (a station wagon: three in the back row, four in the middle, two in the passenger’s seat). We changed money to Leones while we waited for the taxi to fill. The driver had three family members he said we’d be picking up, and it did not take long for the other seat to fill. After paying a small bribe at the Pamalap-Kambia border and waving goodbye to the woman claiming to be the presidents daughter, we arrived in Freetown. A blood-red full moon shed light on Freetowns landmark - the imposing 500 year old cotton tree - as innumerable bats left their daylight refuge among the cotton trees gnarled branches. Once again we stayd in one of my aunts apartments, right in the city centre. Kerosene lanterns and candles compose the only streetlight in this city of no electricity - and ablaze the small popcorn/youghurt-vendours, the street-pharmacies with their phony Nigerian pharmaceuticals and the dealers in hard liqueur - selling it in plastic bags. Introduction: I was born in Koidu Town in the district of Kono in 1969. lived all my life in Lebanon and back here in 1982 because of the war in lebanon, then back to Lebanon after one and a half years. finished my highschool, went to law school, as i was preparing my final 1st year exams, another battle a deadly one clashed in 1988. i had to leave Lebanon back to Kono. stayed 3 month in there then we all moved to Freetown, opened a new business after 35 years in Kono. it was tough. totally completely different life from up country. its like you have traveled to another country. to a better one on one hand and a bad on the other. i worked with my dad for a year in his new business ... read more
