Monday started in Freetown again – went back to Flash to tidy up after the party and take advantage of the wifi! Later on in the day we went to the Hash which this week started at Danny Devits's house. Each week it starts at a different location. Because my foot still hurt from a couple of weeks ago, I looked after the house and his monkey whilst everyone was out on the run. He has a little monkey called Sheeta. She is on a chain which is sad in a cage, but since we have met her, Danny has kindly lengthened the chain as she seems to enjoy her little life. She never gets locked in the cage so she hides in there when she is scared, and other times she wonders around as far as her chain will let her. She is lovely. I also met Danny's chef who was preparing a lovely big meal for when we returned from the Hash. She is due to give birth next week, but and I do not think they know what maternity leave is over here as they certainly do not slow down over here. I met Donald, a freemason who
is in the Hash. He unfortunately has cancer of the larynx and his freemason and Hash friends are working hard to raise money to send him to India for an operation. I also met an American from Project Peanut Butter is part of a project that have created a form of peanut butter that is easily made over here which is the most efficient way to cure the undernourished. It was amazing listening to his story. After that I spoke to the GM of the Hash – head of the mismanagement team (as they call themselves!), Palo, who is also the Minister of Defense! He was telling us about his brother who works in Harrods in London – so anyone passing – do say hello to Palo's brother, Philip! Food was delicious and I ate too much!
Tuesday morning was spent mostly in the Africell office just waiting! I did get to set up my Blackberry (thanks Sally!) so I now have internet access on my phone relatively cheaply. Apart from the obvious, and contacting people via what's app and Facebook, it has provided invaluable for reading emails immediately and attempting to reply! So if anyone wants to whats
app – the number is: +232 30 911 007! After the long wait for them not to actually sign our contract, we headed to Bliss, a restaurant with wifi for the rest of the day to get more work done.
Wednesday – Joe offered me a lift to Makeni so I spent the day in his office waiting for the sign that we were leaving. Lucky for me, his office was air conditioned with wifi! By 4 o'clock we still had not left so Joe decided to postpone the trip for the day.Not a problem for me as I was working quite productively at this point!
Thursday we left early to go to Makeni. Joe kindly drove back the scenic route along the beaches. Beautiful. I spent the day washing and repacking some bits to take back to Freetown – especially for Em as I had left her behind. I briefly became project manager to try and convert the clinic, where we live in Makeni, into more rooms for the vast amount of volunteers we have coming out. This was not my job and became a little frustrating seeing as I had so many other things to do.
Back to the Clubhouse in the evening for dinner and meet with Joe and Campbell to try and find more accommodation solutions and risk assess some of the travelling around the country for the runners.
Friday – Friday I was lucky to get a lift with Joe back to Freetown with freshly cleaned clothes and new contact lenses for Emma (amongst other things!). The evening started with a quick drink at Atlantic – a beach side bar that the Hash were doing a run from. We then went out for our very special Auction Prize for Danny Devito and Emad. Mark, Emma and I took them to Tessa's which is a really lovely new restaurant that neither of them had been to before which was nice in itself! The food was amazing and donated by the restaurant, and we just ate ourselves silly! After we managed a little dancing at the African themed Open Mic night at O'Casey's. This is where I met John, from Flash who is from Toronto and promised to give my Auntie Pat a big hug from me when hie visits in the next few weeks – so Auntie Pat – if you are reading
this, please expect a visit from John :-)
Saturday was spent working (so for those of you moaning that I am not here to work and all you see is beach pictures – sorry for not including any work pictures – I thought you would be bored by them!). We managed to stop in the evening for Joe to take us to Mamba Point for some lovely food. Sunday was another hardcore day stuck on the computer! Oh the joys of working weekends!
