July 21, 2017 - I woke up at 7am and for breakfast I had a boring cereal I bought yesterday called Bran Stars. The weather looked cloudy and I was wondering what I would be able to do today. I decided to go to Valle de Mai, an UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-see on the island. It is where a large concentration of coco de mer palms grow, and they only grow on this and one other island in the Seychelles. Their nut can weigh 30 pounds, and its shape resembles a woman's butt and thighs, of all things. These grow on the female plant. There is also a male plant that has a catkin with pollen, and it looks distinctly .... male. As I was leaving the house, it started to rain. I ... read more

July 20, 2017 - I set my alarm for 6 am, so of course I was up by 5:30. Used the internet, finished my bag of granola, finished packing. I said good bye to the dogs and Claude and walked to the bus stop. Ten minutes later we were off to Victoria. Being so early in the morning, I was worried about the bus being crowded with my luggage, but it wasn't. It was the first time I'd seen traffic, though, and there was a line waiting to get into the town. But it didn't take too long and I still had plenty of time to walk over to the ferry. It was raining when I got in the bus and overcast when I got out, so I wasn't too sweaty when I arrived at the ... read more

July 19, 2017 - Today I left around 9:30 am and talked a bit to Claude before getting out to the bus. When I got to the road, I saw the bus pull away. Such a bummer. No way to know when it will come. It took half an hour for the next one. I took the bus to Victoria and then asked the drier which bus to take to Port Launay, where I could see a waterfall. He told me to stay on the bus, drove a few feet forward, then pointed out the place to board the right bus. And the right bus was just pulling up. The bus drove through the San Souci area, a lot of that within the national park, and there was a lot of beautiful forest to see. When ... read more

July 18, 2017 - Got up a little earlier this morning. I decided to go for a hike along the coast, and wanted to start before it was too hot, though I'm not sure it is ever really cool enough to be comfortable. I left around 8:30 and only had to wait 10 minutes for the bus. I had to switch buses at Beau Vallon, and the bus I needed was already there. But before I could get off the bus, it had pulled away. Such bad timing. I could either start walking, or wait. I waited. It took about half an hour for the next bus to come along. I took the bus to the end, and that is the start of the trail. There is even a sign and everything. A German couple also ... read more

July 16, 2017 - This morning I had to wake up at 5am, so of course I was waking up all night long to check the time, and finally got up at 4:56am. I finished packing and had a little bit of breakfast - some toast with butter and jam - at Harry's. He drove me to the airport, leaving just before 6am, which I was sure was too late for a 7:30am flight. I checked in quite quickly, and then had to get into a long line for passport control. It was twenty minutes before boarding , and I was getting nrevous. As I stood there, I saw Reese, the kid I met yesterday, wandering around and looking at the line. His flight was at 7:05, and there was far more concern that he would ... read more

July 17, 2017 - I did not sleep well. It was quite warm, and around midnight, I could hear dogs barking. A lot of dogs. And there was some sort of weird clicking sound. I tried ear plugs but I think the ones I had in reach were a little too old. Will have to change them out tonight. For breakfast I made ramen noodles again. All I had, really. I used the internet, as it was back to working again. I got ready for the day, which meant packing my day pack with camera, water, etc. I finally left around 10am and just as I got to the bus stop, the bus showed up. Such timing, as I think it only comes every half an hour or so. It only took about twenty minutes to ... read more

Well we had almost zero Internet access on the cruise, and now we're back on land in Mahe island at a lovely hotel, which does have access in the lobby. All in all this blog hasn't worked out too well, but maybe I can send some more thoughts, impressions from Paris where we'll be spending the weekend on the way home. Can say it's been a wonderful experience, and I'm sorry we couldn't shar it better. On to Paris!... read more

Yesterday was our last full day on La Digue, we left at noon today and are now back on Mahe, the main island. Such a difference! Yesterday morning we ate our breakfast on the beachfront at LA Digue Island Lodge www.ladigue.sc ..it's one of the three best places on La Digue, and to my mind the best because it's within 2 km of the most beautiful beach ever, Source d'Argent so easy walking distance and it has little chalets right on the beach. They're air conditioned so it's comfy at night and very private, with a large bathroom that is actually open air, enclosed and tasteful but actually outdoors. The food however is not good, or should I say inconsistent. We had the buffet the first night and other than the salads it was not good. ... read more

It was an epic adventure getting here. First an overnight flight from Paris to Mahe, then we took a 40 minute ferry from Mahe island to Praslin, and barely made the connection to another ferry to La Digue, but we made it. The island is incredibly beautiful but hot and humid. We're getting used to it, taking lots of dips on the beautiful sea. Around here there's a reef just offshore so no waves to speak of, just beautiful clear turquoise water. Yesterdat we got a couple of bikes and explored the northern end of the island and today we'll go sout to see the best beaches. Yesterday we also walked a c pipe of kilometers to A nse Source Argent, which is exactly the beach I have always wanted to see in person. It is ... read more

Geo: -4.68182, 55.4837Early on the 23rd January we approached the port of Male in the Maldives. It was about 6-30am and the sun was just rising. In the eerie morning stillness an interesting sight was to be seen. Ten storey buildings rising up from the sea. Male is the capital of the Maldives but it is the island which does not appear in tourist brochures. All the main infrastructure and government buildings are situated on this one island and most of the population live here. The resort islands are more remote and are probably the stunning places shown in the advertising. However, Male is far from that. As we sailed towards this place we passed another island on which the airport is situated, in fact the whole island is the airport. It was a busy airport ... read more
