"Sinon ça va?" qu'Abdoulaye me redemande.

... ... read more

Balconies en masse We might as well beging by admitting that we cheat a little bit this time. Some of the text, which isn't much in the first place, we have simply copied from a couple of blogs we wrote a few years ago. But we spend so much time writing all the other blog entries that we think that once in a while we can allow ourselves to put together one entry where we don't have to write quite as much as we normally do. Also, when we started this blog in 2006 the main purpose was to make it possible for us to upload photos and make them available to our friends and relatives. It was publishing the photos that was the main purpose, not actually writing the text which accompanies the pictures. We ... read more

Senegalese wildlife - mainly birds and goats If you are a nature buff and want to see wildlife in Senegal your best bet would be to go for bird watching. There are several national parks around famous for the abundant birdlife. If you want to see other wildlife than birds in Senegal there is at least one wildlife park, Fathala Reserve, where you can see typical African animals such as elephants, giraffes, zebras and lions. When we read about that park we got the feeling that it is small park, so small that it might feel a bit like a zoo. Also the animals there have been relocated to Fathala Reserve from other parts of Africa because in West Africa they have not been roaming around in the wild for many decades. We have seen all ... read more

Tree hugging, oyster "eating" and more You are now reading the second part of our trip in Senegal. The previous blog entry included what we saw in Dakar and north thereof. In this we will tell you about the places we visited south of Dakar. Joal-Fadiouth Joal-Fadiouth is a very special place and we are happy that we went there. It is not a place where you are likely to hang around for more than a few hours but it certainly is worth the journey there and back. Joal-Fadiouth is better described as two separate communities, Joal and Fadiouth. Joal is a busy town where the main industry is fishing. It is not very interesting place unless you like busy fishing towns. Fadiouth is on an island, separated from Joal by a 500 me... read more

A pink lake, which is not very pink, a colonial city, which lacks colonial buildings, and an old town, which is not so old Here comes the second blog entry from our Christmas/New Year vacation in the Gambia and Senegal. Since we spent much more time in Senegal than in the Gambia we also have more to write about from there. We will divide the Senegal part of the trip into four separate blog entries. This one will focus on three places: Lake Retba, Dakar and Saint-Louis. Lake Retba Lake Retba is a lake just north of Dakar which is a popular place to visit for people who travel in Senegal. There is a beach near the hotels/resorts and there are several activities you can do but the main attraction is the lake itself. Lake Retba ... read more

Dear All Greetings once more from Senegal! I have made it full-circle on my trip, and am currently writing this one again from Dakar, from whence my journey began, and funnily enough, the exact same room of the Hotel Oceanic (Room 206) where I began this journey five weeks ago today. It feels a long time, I have come a long way since I last wrote, and if I’m honest, I’m really quite tired now…! This has been a wonderful journey, a really enjoyable one, full of really amazing adventures and places, though I will save my post-trip analysis for when I write my final update once touched down back in the UK and safely returned to my beautiful little Victorian terraced home again. I believe it has been a bit longer since I last updated ... read more

Dear All Greetings once more from Dakar. I have come full circle now in my journey so far, although am only around halfway through the whole trip. I always find it interesting to return to the same place I started a trip in – when I arrived, and although I had very good first impressions still, Dakar seemed very much a step back from the development of Europe. It still is so, but after two and a half weeks in the Senegalese hinterland, and The Gambia, this place seems so developed in comparison, and it is almost a luxury being here. The Hotel Oceanic, although very basic by European standards, also seems luxurious now, with very quiet air-conditioning, hot water and a powerful shower, fast and continual WiFi connection, and no electricity or water cuts (these ... read more

Africa » Senegal » Diourbel Region » Touba August 1st 2017

Dear All Greetings from a place called Touba, a little-known city to outsiders, located in central Senegal, but very well-known within Senegal. Touba, or Touba-Mbacke, as I am currently staying in the small town of Mbacke on the outskirts of Touba, for reasons which will be explained below, is the spiritual heart of the country, the centre of a Senegalese order of Sufi Muslims called the Mourides. It is an interesting and very beautiful place indeed, and I am glad I overcame some initial reservations to come here and visit. I currently write once more from an air-conditioned and white-sheeted location, but not quite so luxurious, a world away from boutique-status, and rather unclean – the Campement Touristique d’Etat Le Baol, the only place to stay in town. It is comfortable at least. I believe I ... read more
