As mentioned in another blog, following our successful mountain gorilla expedition, it left us with a free day with which we headed into Rwanda for a day trip. The border crossing was a bit of a mission but we made it in and I was surprised at how green and vibrant the road was into Kigala, the capital of Rwanda. The roads were also in fantastic condition – in complete contrast to the rest of Africa! We made it into the capital and our first stop was the Genocide museum for some ‘tourism of tears’. I had visited a few of these type of places in my travel – Buchenwald in Germany, Auschwitz in Poland, the Killing Fields in Cambodia and various other war memorials but it is still horrific to read about what people do ... read more

This very disturbing but true and must be shared. It's the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Francine and I can remember the reporting on the television. It was suppose to be a civil war of the warring ethnic groups. However being here we learned it was 100 days of killing the minority who were also the richest and most educated, the Tutsi. This was a systematic plan that had been constructed to take place. The government In power, the Hutu was the majority of people who represented the lower class, it had nothing to do with ethic classes as Rwandan people were of one language, same heritage and one country. It was a division started by the colonization by the German's and then the Belgium's, Who perpetuated the idea of ethnic groups. ... read more

Leandra and I took one Friday off from Kihefo so we could meet up with the rest of the U of S girls and go to Rwanda for the weekend. The girls, Gena, Thea, Heather and Lindsay made their way to Kabale early in the afternoon where we hired a driver to take us to Kigali, the capital city. The Rwanda border is only a short drive away from where Leandra and I stay so we made it there in less than 45 minutes. At the border, they took all our passports, visas and paperwork at the same time while we waited off to the side. While we were waiting, people behind us in line would come and go, as they were still processing our information. Eventually, after about 45 minutes they started to hand back ... read more

On May 30th, I began a two week trip that took me through Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I don't have the patience right now to type up blog entries that could do it justice so for now I'll just post a fraction of the pictures that I actually took while there. Hope you enjoy!... read more

Geo: -1.95325, 30.0587Rwanda, A country with an unfortunate past and it seems that that past might have an effect on peoples perception of the country. People may think that because of this past that it is a dangerous place to visit. I really like the country that has rapidly improved and looking to become a hub of Africa. It's a small country but it still has things to offer.Though in saying all of this, sure, the past does play with ones mind. It was only 19 years ago, and sitting next to or having a conversation with a Rwandan of that generation isn't the most assuring. How can you look past the fact that there is the possibility that this person has killed or in most cases lost a family member. How can you fully enjoy ... read more

Geo: -1.95325, 30.0587We had an interesting flight out of the Nairobi Airport on Rwandair. Since the fire at the Nairobi Airport, the departure terminals have all been moved around. So, it took us a while to find out from what terminal we needed to check our bags. But, everything worked out fine. We arrived at the Kigali Airport in Rwanda, and were greeted by our Natural Habitat representative. We did a quick drive through the city, including a pass by Hotel Rwanda. Then, we visited the Genocide Memorial/Museum. It was very moving and thought provoking. It is very hard to believe that something like that can happen in 1994. We found it interesting that today Rwandans do not even discuss Tutsi and Hutus "classifications" anymore, nor the classification of their ancestors. From there, we made the 3-hour ... read more

Geo: -1.95325, 30.0587We will be behind on our blog for awhile. Sorry, our faithful readers! You will just have to be patient. We volunteered for 2 weeks in Arusha,Tanzania then went on a 6-day safari to Tanangire, Ngorogoro, Serengeti and Manyara National Parks. We are now heading to Livingstone, Zambia for a 21-day G Adventure overland tour and will have little Internet access. As you know, Jim spends many hours choosing and processing his photos and hasn't had much time lately to get that done. He took about 3000 photos on the safari so selecting his best ones will be a feat in itself. We will try to get our volunteering and safari blogs out but no promises; it may take up to 3 weeks.Travel continues to treat us well and we are having fun in Africa!... read more

Hello! So this is going to be quick, I apologize that it's not going to be my best writing. It's been an exhausting few days traveling. I was supposed to get to Kigali at 1:30 am but didn't get in until 4, and then my baggage never arrived so I had to make a claim. I was met by Emma, an employee of Big Beyond, and was brought back to a hotel in Rwanda. I had to pay $50 for a room to sleep in for 3 hours, and now I'm waiting for them to come get me again. I got maybe an hour of sleep in that 3 hour span. There were so many birdschirping and dogs barking and other unknown animals making their noises. There was also a guy playing a folk guitar or ... read more

So after 24 hours of travel (which isn't as bad as some of the horror stories I've heard) we are in our hotel in Kigali. Luckily both flights were relatively calm - keeping Anne's white knuckle moments to a minimum. The most excitement we encountered was when a lady collapsed from exhaustion in the Montreal airport. I felt quite important when we came out of the baggage claim area to see a gentleman with our names on a sheet of paper. The feeling quickly disappeared however when both our Visa cards were declined and we were forced to use our spending cash for the room. Our moods sunk even lower when we were given a speech on using 'small bills' to pay for purchases - apparently the exchange rate is horrible on anything below 50 dollar ... read more
