For the past couple of days the van had been suffering from a distinct loss of power and a red warning light was flashing at me. Rian, our travelling engineer, diagnosed a non-functioning turbo. Therefore it was deposited at a garage in the town of Tsumeb which was on our route today. The town sits on a rich vein of copper, other metals and unusual crystals which were mined until it became uneconomical in the 1990s. Whilst the van was repaired we looked around the museum depicting the town’s mining history.

With a fully functioning vehicle we sped onwards to Etosha, the last major National Park we shall visit on this trip. Etosha consists of a huge silvery white sanded pan and the area around it on which live many of Africa’s big game. We are spending the next two nights on rest camps within the Park and plan to visit several water holes which are the best places to view the animals and birds.
