Namibia on land
We were off to Namibia in search of adventure! It was only a two hour flight to Windhoek (pronounced Vindhoek) when we landed it was really hot! I all most died from the heat.
We rented a car so we could drive to Swakupmond since it's to small to fly to. It took a really long drive I listened to music all the way there on my iPod. We got in about noon the hotel it is all most on the beach we could see the ocean from are rooms. On the top there is a pool only to relax in and look at the ocean. Are room was on the third floor a nice place one from the top two to the pool. There are elevators but I prefer the stairs. We relaxed the rest of the day and unpacked. We did go for a walk later in the day to get supplies and check out the town it's a pretty cool place lots of craft shops and little Cafes. We walked along the beach with the waves crashing. We had supper at the hotel restaurant it was pretty good.
The next day we
went for a walk around agin. Had lunch at a local place did some shopping. Then at 4:00 we went to place were you get a guided tour of the desert beside Swakupmond on quad bikes! It was my first time riding alone so it was a slow start but then we started to pick up speed and go fast. At points we had to go full speed or we would get stuck an at parts we would slow down to stop from falling off the edge of a dune. The best parts are when we got to go up a steep dun then race down like a roller coster!! We would do that when guild would. He was very nice we would stop ever once in a wile and show us some neat stuff like how there is a lot of metal in the sand and with a magnet you can pick lots up. Also the dessert right by Swakupmond is the only living dessert in Namibia. The reason is that there are that the plants and animals take the moisture from the fog then turns it into water. The fog comes from the ocean so the fog is
salty and when it hits the cold bug it condensates and you get water. The geckoes eat the bugs that collect the fog water and gets bothe protein and water. The guild caught a lizard and showed us what it does for protection. It buries it's self in the sand to hide once there is no threat it comes out it also does that when the sand is to hot to stand on it goes in the cool sand below.
We were out there for two hours racing around the duns and looking at the beautiful views. One of the view we could see all over the desserts land scape and behind you was they ocean with the setting sun. It was almost dark went back to the company building and return the quads. We were the last costumers in the place and they were closing up shop and putting the parakeets in the cage. We had supper at the hotel agin that night since it was late.
In the morning we had reserved a spot in the living dessert tour. With Onscar he's a really nice guy. We had some other people with us. We stop right
off the bat. He explains what to look for on the sand like tracks and little holes. Then told us to see if there were any little tracks any we're close. We found two holes one of a spider and another from a small gecko that is almost see threw, I could see the back bone and the organs of the gecko. That type of gecko would make it's home in the sand and digs deep in the sand. The spider that make a house in the sand and uses it's silk to hold it up. then when prey walks by they jump out and eat it. The big ones can even eat lizards. We drove around the place and looked at different bugs and animals.
We were really lucky we got to see a chameleon and a Side Winder. Are guild said that he doesn't see them all the time especially the Side Winder. The Iguana was all black for so reason or on other but he was in a green bush. So wasn't that great of a disguise. The guide put out some meal worms for the chameleon to eat. It was really cool to watch its
tongue come out and grab its prey. The Side Winder was hiding under a bush a ways away. Buried its self under the sand. It must of had a big meal earlier that week. So it was just digesting its food in peace. The guild blew off the sand so we could see it a lot better. Later that day we on the moon land scape. It was an hour drive to the moon scape we had the wife of Onscar. She is also really nice. We drove throw a land scape that looked like the moon. In the old days there were these stones that you could make sound out of and would talk to each other from fare away if the wind is right you can hear it from a long ways away. There were plants that belonged to a certain family's it is great honour to own one and the family's are really protective about it. There was another plant that had fruit that looked like watermelon. The land scape was beautiful withe the rocks and sand every were. We also saw a pre historic plant that can grow to the age of 2500 years old. It
only has four leaves in it life time. And 2 are just to protect the 2 other smaller and continually growing that need to get stronger before seeing the world so the two outer leaves die and the others just keep growing for thousands of years.
