NamibRand We arrive at NamibRand Nature Reserve and there's no rest for the wicked - Tim and Sofia, one of the other volunteers, are straight out (while Sue takes a well-deserved rest!) go for a drive and climb a small hill to get a good vantage point to try and pick up some VHF signals from the collars that the cats are fitted with before they're released. No joy, unfortunately, they're elusive creatures. My, it's windy! The next morning the changing season makes itself known. Although this is semi-desert, it's still spring and a cold front has moved in bringing moisture from the sea. It's very cold but we're blessed with a spectacular sunrise with mist rolling on through the valley as we saddle up and make off to find those errant cats. Later on that ... read more

"Dune, Arrakis, Desert Planet..." Another early start for us as we get up before sunrise to head for the dune in Deadvlei (to quote one our readers 'the sodding middle of sod all'). A whole bunch of us jump in the 4x4 to being the 65km journey into the valley of the dunes. Our first stop is the well-known Dune 45 (45km from the entrance) which is one of the few dunes that you are allowed to climb and the most accessible. We climb up the dune ridge, thankfully made easier by following other's footsteps and the view across the valley, which is at a point where the dual dune ridges have yet to converge, expands. As we progress upwards Sue suffers from an attack of vertigo. Comments like 'come on Sue, you'd ski down that, ... read more

After the adrenalin rush of Swakopmund, our next destination is a bit more sedate... the rolling red sand dunes of Sossusvlei, in the Namib Naukluft National Park. We drive from camp into the desert, then take a bumpy and cramped ride on the back of a jeep into the vlei. For those who don't know (and who would?), the vlei is a clay pan, formed after rainfall, when the Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river. The trees died as there no longer was enough water to survive, and the result is a clay pan full of tree 'skeletons' - sossus means 'dead'. Guiding us through ... read more

We saw the Namibian Desert. Our first stop was at Dune 45, which is located on Sossusvlei Road. The Dune is 150m tall, and is 45m from Sesriem and Sossusvlei. Again the walk up the dune was painful. The wind was blowing so hard that the people’s tracks in front of me were covered quickly. This is really too bad because walking in other people’s tracks make the hike up a very tall sand dune a lot easier. The view from the top was okay; the best part is that I can say that I climbed one of the oldest sand dunes in the world. The really fun part was running down the back side of the dune. Sylvia and I started running down at the same time, she was a few feet in front of ... read more

NAMIBIA! Namibia was wonderful. VERY different from Malawi. Even though our plane was delayed in Cape Town, it was no problem to get to our hotel in Windhoek. There are plenty of taxis, and a shuttle, eager to take you to Windhoek. HOWEVER, it would be good to ask someone who works at the airport what the real price for taxis are before negotiating with the taxi’s… We stayed at the Cardboard Box Backpackers in Windhoek on Saturday the fourth of July. However, we poorly planned when to come to Namibia as far as tours go… NOTE to the Traveler, make sure you know when the tours leave before you book your trip. I think that organized tours leave something like Saturdays and Mondays (don't quote me on that). Basically we got to Namibia right in ... read more

Day 10 (Thursday 30-Apr-09, JRJ) Woke up by howling jackals at 5am which is a unique alarm call if not a bit unnerving. On the bus at 5:20 to get to Dune 45 for sunrise. The barrier blocking the exit from the camp was chained up and the guard was nowhere to be seen - apparently he had overslept (it was supposed to open at 5). After a 10 minute wait, Will, the driver decided there was only one option - Bolt Cutters! As soon as the barrier was lifted, all the vehicles made a mad dash towards Dune 45 at breakneck speed. We got to the base of the Dune around 30 mins later and everyone piled out of the truck and began to race up the dune to get to the top before the ... read more

Day 9 (Wednesday 29-Apr-09, JRJ) Up at 5am to go on a sunrise walk at Fish River Canyon as we missed the sunset walk last night due to timing issues. Wasn't too bad having to get up so early, and we were glad of a nice walk in preparation for the 10 hour driving day. Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon, but it doesn't seem as spectacular for some reason. After walk, had brekkie and off we went. Stopped at a small town called Bethanie for a quick toilet break and bought some Biltong (sun dried strips of meat). I had chilli bites of wildbiltong (a mix of Kudu and Oryx antelopes) and Nat had Beesbiltong (beef). On the way, we saw a few herds of Springbok, ... read more
