We're on our way to the Sahara Desert! I wrote down a stream-of-consciousness while we made our way out to the UNESCO certified Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou: I'm sitting in a van full of people, up in front with the drive. Being able to see out the front window makes me feel more a part of the scenes I'm passing. Gorgeous Marrakech; streets flooded with bikers, pedestrians, horses, buses, cars and taxis. Streets on the outskirts of Marrakech flanked by orange trees and red clay buildings. Tiny villages now, dotted with red buildings, some adorned with a bright red Coca Cola sign. Little towns getting ready for market. Cactus lined roads as we snake up the beginnings of the Atlas. French on the radio. Tractors tilling the soil, people standing around, children walking across fields to ... read more

Even after a thorough cleaning last night - albeit with a weak shower - I still had sand everywhere. We made a quick stopover in Dades Gorge. There are rock formations called “monkeys’ fingers” that look more like gorillas’ fingers to me. Our destination today is Ait Ben Haddou, along the Route of 1000 Kasbahs and Ouarzazate, an area for many film productions such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Alexander. Apparently a new video game called Prince of Persia also used this area as its backdrop. Ait Ben Haddou itself is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. It used to be an important point along the caravan route until the French built the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Most of the families have moved to the other side of the river but six families still ... read more

Our first visit to the African continent starts with a long corkscrew descent into Marrakech airport. After clearing customs we exchange money, pick up our backpacks and head outside into the welcoming warm spring air. First challenge: make it to the CTM bus station in town. On most of our travels so far this would be reasonable simple, but there are three things against us - one, Morocco’s first language is Arabic, two, their second language is French, and three, foreigners are seen as easy targets for inflated prices. So we wander up to the group of drivers milling around the taxi rank and try “CTM bus station?” “Yes, yes,” is the response and we’re ushered towards a car when we ask how much. The price seems more than a UK fare, so we decline the ... read more

Here we go again, trying to type English on a French keyboard! This morning we woke up early drove through busy Marrakech and were treated by the beautiful Atlas mountains. There is really no way to describe what an incredible experience it was, but I will try and do it some justice (thank goodness for the camera!). The mountain ranges leave you breathless and the view is ever changing. The crayon-box blue sky was the back-drop for the rusty colored homes that blended in seamlessly into the rock of the mountain side. The most spectacular views were dipping into the valley and how the lush green folliage contrasts with the brown tones of the Kasbas and offset by the bluest of skies. We shared the car with a man by the name of Pascal from France ... read more

13 Sep - we leave the Todra Gorge and drive throught the Dades Gorge which is even more spectacular...very red stone and strange rock formations, some look like giant feet. Drive through the valley of the 1000 Kasbahs to Ouarzazate. This area is famous for being used by Hollywood as a film set (including good old Lawrence of Arabia) and they are currently filming Prince of Persia: Sands of Time with Ben Kingsley, due for release in 2010. We visit a herbologist who explains all the herbs and spices used by the berbers for both cooking and medicinal purposes. I buy some mint green tea and sandalwood to use on pulse points to ease stress and sore heads...not that I'm suffering from much stress at the moment :) We then arrive at the fortified village / ... read more

Hello! I hope you are enjoying the summer back home. I have to say that even though it's supposed to be dry heat here, it still feels very humid. I can tell we are in the desert because soaking wet clothes dry within an hour! Kelly and I spent our last night hanging out with some British tourists and some locals. We had some really good talks about the differences in our cultures. They said it can be very difficult for them to travel because they are Muslim and everyone assumes that they are terrorists. We also talked a lot about why the women cover. It was a great learning experience. We then spent a few days in Marrakesh before heading to the Sahara desert. Marrakesh is much more fast paced than Essaouria. We spent some ... read more

Jonathans fast time - the truth We in the tent believe that Jonathan did not actually run the race; he studied the map book really well and then got a lift in the jeep! Shocking I know, but it is not possible for an Irish man to run that fast! (Apart from my brother stubbie who is running Boston the weekend after next!) Team Naïve Team Naïve were housed in Tent 63, the name came about on the first day given that we were all new to the race. It was made up of six persons, me and Jon (designated team photographer), Alice (our in house Doctor) Mark (our interpreter), James (the Hedge trimmer) and Jes (who still managed to pull the French doctor even though he smelled like a goat!). The Tent Jonathan’s experience ... read more
