January 19-20, 2013 The 19th was raining, windy and super cold and we had school. BUT, we have some great pictures for Sunday, the 20th! Make sure to look at them, because they really capture the awesome flavor of Rabat. The main differences between our trip to Central America and now are: (1) it is cold; (2) the women are very conservatively dressed; (3) and this is a big one, we cannot communicate, not even slightly; (4) eye contact is not popular; and (5) the food is Moroccan. We headed out for the sights with a group of people with like-minded ideas. When all was said and done, we walked about 5.5 miles today. We saw many people, the Atlantic Ocean, a huge cemetery, shops, stalls, the Kasbah, the river, and an 11th century mosque. We ... read more

January 15-16, 2013 2 days melt into 1 as we cross the ocean… We have arrived in the fabulous Kingdom of Morocco!!! So there we were, sitting and watching approximately 100 people in the lobby of the Holiday Inn trying to load two years’ worth of luggage on three buses… We must admit that the sight was interesting and it was delightful to watch the humorous mayhem. Group leaders were selected yesterday to organize the endeavor and collect money for tips. One of the female Peace Corp Volunteers (PCV’s) asked Clay if he was good at fixing “knots” and then asked Ann if she minded if Clay rubbed out her “knot.” Now, don’t think anything too much about it, she actually DID have a crick in her neck. Once seated on the bus, we were given ... read more

After a smooth train journey to Rabat we checked in to the Pietri Hotel in the centre of the business district. It wasn't exactly cheap but then again we couldn't find any alternatives that were an awful lot cheaper and it was the same hotel where our friend, Linda, was staying. The room was very comfortable and, no sooner had we checked in than there was a knock at the door and Linda was there with some pizza for lunch! She had to go to work though but we made arrangements to meet later. We spent the afternoon wandering around town and were amazed by the modern trams which grace the streets now. They were not there on our last visit. From some of the information posters we saw there are some very grand plans afoot. ... read more

So this week I have been in a weird mood. It's getting to be the end of the program, I only have one month left and it's really bittersweet. I am craving home(I legitimately had a dream about eating Domines Pizza last night) but at the same time I can't bear the thought of saying goodbye to my host family. They are the best part of this program hands down and I can't believe I have only known them for three months, they make me feel like I have been part of their family forever. I've been looking at jobs for next semester online and I'm also starting to look at different programs through with I can teach in China or Taiwan next year, and that's absolutely crazy to think about. The other day we had ... read more

So I am not sure if I said this before, but the whole time I have been here my program director, Madiha, has been pregnant. We got an email at the very end of the break that the baby had finally arrived! This was especially exciting because we have pretty much been on the edges of our seats trying to guess the gender...turns out she is a girl! Her name is Safiya and she is TINY. Aliya, her two year old sister is fascinated but also quite jealous (as to be expected). There was a party for her birth the other day, as is customary to Moroccan culture once the baby is about ten days old. We had amazing food, pastilla made of almonds, vegetable tartes, artichoke and cheese wraps, and then piles and piles of ... read more

Oh and did I mention that the morning after our first bush camping experience we had to dig the truck out? If all this seems a bit and out of order it's because one entry has been lost... Camp for the night and while the others try to get their visas for Mauratania, Ghana etc (we already have ours) sis and I visit Casablanca then back to Fes for 2 days.... read more

I have a LOT to say about the last weekend, however I have to write fast because I have a cold and I just took Nyquil, I want to get this finished before I fall asleep.... Firstly, a week ago we had our CIEE culture party at my Resident Director's house. It was amazing, we all wore traditional clothes, ate couscous, got to dance with bellydancers, and got henna done for the first time. My Director's two year old daughter also got henna done, and it was hysterical because it was only on her palms, and she was clearly not content waiting for it to dry. They eventually had to bribe her to wait longer by adding small amounts of glitter to her hands every once in a while, but it did not change the look ... read more
