Friday at school was a day the kids get to play games. In the morning we got to do our usual and work with the younger children and then head to our stay home for the sacred couscous lunch. Our host family's couscous was amazing and I think it was our first meal without bread. We then headed back to school and Jill and my activity we did with the kids was show them how to make origami fortune tellers. We had them colour the outsides, place the numbers 1-8 on the insides and then wrote animal names on the inner sides. A lot of the kids loved them and wanted 2-3 to take home. We also got to play musical chairs and the kids and man are they ever aggressive! We stayed a lot longer ... read more

On Tuesday we went back to La Garderie Nour to work with the kids. It was tons of fun. In the morning we worked with the really young kids (probably age 1-3). They are so cute. We listened to the older kids recite the Koran and then we all had recess together. Recess was a lot of fun and consisted of us dancing to the Macarena and singing happy birthday. After lunch we went back to teach the older kids (age 4-10) English. There are about forty kids in this class. It was fun but I honestly was a little nervous. This age group is much harder to entertain. After school we found a cemetery overlooking the ocean. In the Islamic religion you must be buried on your right side facing towards Mecca. The cemetery was ... read more

2014-04-20 - We finally have arrived in Casablanca, Morocco after 21 hours of travelling (Calgary-Montreal-Paris-Casablanca). We took the train from the Casablanca Airport to Casa Voyagers station. The infrastructure here is quite shocking. You see some places that are nice and livable but you also see others that you think are condemned, as they look like they are going to fall down with the slightest breeze but people are still living in them. We got off the train and we were going to walk to our house we rented but could not get our orientation so we decide to take a taxi. It was even a bit tricky for our driver as not one street (that I seen) had signs identifying what road you are on or crossing...not sure how they do it here but man, ... read more

Postanowiliśmy pół dnia spędzić na tarasie naszego riadu -gòrujacym nad dachami mediny - pozwalając małejEm gotować mietową herbatę z 5 kostkami cukru i biegać bez opamiętania, zamiast przeciskac sie miedzy motocyklami i dwukołówkami, wdychajac kurz. Gdzieniegdzie z piachu wystaje minaret. Do Rabatu dojechaliśmy umęczeni i z opóźnieniem, w pociągu gorąco i tłoczno. Za to samo miasto już na pierwszy rzut oka wyglada elegancko - promenady, fontanny, światła. I piękny riad w ... read more

Morocco has long been on my list of places to visit, but had never made it to the top. Perhaps I was unmotivated because it regularly used to get voted as one of the 'hassle capitals' of the world. I had heard that there had been a concerted government campaign to change that behaviour because of a tangible reduction of the number of visitors. This might be old news, but I can say at the outset that I would now class this as a low hassle country with some of the most kind and pleasant people you would care to meet. Morocco also has the advantage of allowing Britons free entry for 3 months and is served by several budget airlines from theUK. We paid £30 (+ baggage) each way for flights to Marrakech. As we ... read more

On Sep 21, 2011, I flew from Vancouver to London Stansted, Stansted to Jerez, Spain, and then from there, I was driven to Gibraltar. The Vancouver airport experience was one of the best airport experiences I’ve ever had. When I looked it up online, it turned out that it IS actually rated one of the best airports in the world. From there I flew to Stansted where I had the worst airport experience I’ve ever had. Everything was ghastly expensive. You have to pay to get your luggage weighed and luggage storage was well beyond anything I could afford. My connecting flight was the next day so at around 9:30pm, when the airport looked pretty empty, I went to sleep. When I woke up around 4am, I was so shocked to find that the airport was ... read more

So I never wrote the last blog for my final week in Morocco. It was probably because it's been so depressing to think about...The last week flew by, I was excited to go home but also dreading saying goodbye to everyone. I slept in my friends' house a few times that week and the night before I had to leave I just started bawling. I didn't know if I would ever see some of these people again. The resident director's family was about 30 people so I hugged and kissed them all goodbye and then just went home crying my eyes out. My family tried to comfort me but kept saying "stop stop you're not leaving yet!". I drew a few portraits for them the night before as a goodbye gift, which they really loved. The ... read more

January 21-23, 2013 We hope you enjoyed the photos from Rabat -- we sure enjoyed sharing them! (And taking them too!!!) We have to say that training (except for the sitting down for a long time part) is really comprehensive and useful, and appropriately entertaining. We really look forward to mealtimes at the hotel and we hope that we do not appear to be getting any more robust in our photos. LOL! What can we say about the thought of moving into a village where we are complete strangers in every possible way, but hope not only to be accepted, but have people desire to be around and learn from us? (And of course, us from them.) Let us add to that thought, the fact that we presently cannot communicate at all with those we hope ... read more
