The next stage of our trip in Morocco was a four day trip from Fes to Marrakech via the Atlas mountains and the Sahara desert. Day One - Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane, the Atlas mountains and Midelt We were picked up from our hotel in Fes at 9am; we walked out of the medina, hopped in the car and set off towards Ifrane. On the way out of Fes we drove past plantations of fruit trees and farms. The scenery changed as we got further from Fes and after after about an hour and a half we arrived in Ifrane which is in the Middle Atlas mountains. Ifrane is known as the 'Switzerland of Morocco' as it is a resort city known for its nearby ski resorts. Apparently 85% of the properties in the town ... read more

Today was an ideal touring day after the hectic pace to date & a big day set for tomorrow. A late breakfast was followed by a gorgeous 2 hour hike in sunny temperate conditions & the outlook of the changing autumn colours along the Todra River. The valley is farmed by local Berbers with a huge diversity of fruit & produce & the clever use of irrigation channels for water during the dryer months & larger channels to prevent flooding after the winter melt. At the end of the walk the gorge narrows to little more than the width of the road alongside the river & flanked by enormous cliffs each side. AHfter today's food tasting of goat targine for lunch we went to a woman's carpet/ rug weaving/embroidery/knotting Cooperative supported by Intrepid. Absolutely beautiful hand ... read more

While the option was on offer to rise before dawn for some more dune climbing to watch the sunrise everyone opted to stay in bed for as long as possible due to the intensely cold night. It was then back on the Camel for a return trip to our staging point. The ride was more comfortable & just as sureal as yesterday but I can feel some muscles I never knew I had. After a welcome breakfast we set off for a 3.5 hour drive to Todra Gorge. Todra is a massive trench that rises 250 metres forming one of the most dramatic and spectacular natural sights in Morocco and now a magnet for trekkers & rock climbers. Along all the waterways were vast palm tree plantations that in turn shielded crops of olive, fig, almond ... read more

The anticipation of the Sahara experience made the uninteresting 5 hour drive to the end of the road frontier settlement of Merzouga worthwhile. A typical mud brick Berber hotel was the staging point for our stay at a Berber camp in the Sahara Desert. On the way we crossed from the middle to the anti Atlas at 1907 mtrs but mostly signified by a barren rocky outlook with occasional knarly juniper trees which can happily survive in the harsh environment. Further along the river valleys the scenery changed to lush date palm valleys. Most of our luggage was stored for the night at our staging point (Auberge Salama) with only basic necessities able to be carried via a one-hour camel ride to a Berber desert camp under the stars. Timed to arrive near sunset the slog ... read more

We continue to be blessed with perfect weather, no rain( although it's meant to be the wet season) & cloudless blue skies. Today was a 4 hour drive to Midelt to start of a journey through 3 specific geographic regions of the Atlas mountains. Leaving Fez we soon start a continuous gentle climb to the middle Atlas mountains signified initially by intensive agriculture in fertile valleys and changing to cedar forests and flattening out to a treeless, rocky plateau and the occasional nomadic shepherd. Today was a moving day and our stop in Midelt was mainly an opportunity to break a long trip to the Sahara with breaks to wander through ex,a weekly Berber market, enjoy a Moroccan BBQ lunch and an easy walk to explore a traditional Berber village. Our overnight stay at Auberge Jaafar ... read more

Today we took a short train ride to Rabat, the capital of Morocco. The train system is surprisingly good. Like Casablanca, Rabat is also not high on the must do tourist route, despite its long and colourful history. Rabat has been a Roman Empire outpost, a pirate haven and now a clean modern city home to the parliament. We spend a few hours strolling through the city's old walled quarter, and then walked up to Kasbah des Oudaias, The Kasbah is a quaint area with narrow winding streets lined with whitewashed houses, distinctive blue doors and commanding views over the Atlantic Ocean. We then walked to the Hassan Tower, the minaret of a vast incomplete mosque due to construction stopping on the death of the Sultan in 1199. Alongside is a modern white marble mausoleum where ... read more

Our decision to visit Morocco was made late. This trip is about Ireland and Greece, with a side trip to the UK to chase down a few long dead relatives and some very much alive friends. But we did need to spend at least 24 days out of the Shengen area so that we didn't overstay our 90 days in 180 visa waiver allowance – again. Where to spend that time? Why not some of it in Morocco? Morocco – and the rest of the Arab world – has always been on our agenda. I started to learn some Arabic in preparation some years ago, but that intention slipped away as the workload establishing our new home increased. Travelling through Morocco without Arabic as independent travellers – researching the country to work out which places would ... read more

The parents did eventually make it in to the town of Chefchouen, as the rain had lightened in the afternoon. They planned to buy water, eggs and bread. They bought a pasta strainer and a couple of other bits, but they forgot to pick up the bread and water. The next morning started off with a shower (surprise surprise), but had stopped after breakfast so we packed up, and headed for our next destination, the Volubis ruins near Meknes. On the way we stopped at a cafe and it had the film White house down playing on the tv. This was quite a distraction as we found ourselves just sitting there watching it. For Lunch we stopped in another small town and had an egg and salad sandwich which was really good, then just as we were ... read more

Route from last entry... Boulemane Dades - Merzouga (Sahara Desert) - Fes - Chefchaouen - Tangier - SPAIN!! Leaving from the last blog, after that sweet hotel in Boulemane Dades, we set off for a night in the Sahara desert near Merzouga. Having received a random confirmation email a few days back that we had been upgraded to a private luxury berber camp in the Sahara, we were pretty excited to say the least. Our route to the Sahara was surreal, driving through a landscape of scorched earth, nothing around but a random camel or goat or two. It was a long drive but we arrived at Merzouga, the gateway city to the desert. Now, from here, most tours (that's how you see the desert) just stop at town and base yourself there for the obligatory ... read more
