Essaouira... The Wind City. Home to Kite Boarding, Blue and White houses and fishy smells. We camped up here for a few days, just to chillax after the chaos of Marrakech. On our arrival at the bus station we were set upon by hustlers of all shapes and sizes, with little energy to resist we were dragged from Hostel to hotel to Riad with little success. Eventually we came to Riad El Mess, it was a heaven and after some of the flea-pits we had seen - before you could say 'hello, yes please, come see my shop, just for looking' we were showered and shaved and looking slightly more alive. The rest of the day was spent wandering the medina, sussing out this seaside town. Up bright and early on day 2 in Essaouira, we ... read more

I apologize for the lack of detail in my blogs. I'm enjoying a quiet moment of solitude- the only one that I feel like I've had in a couple of days- at 3:15am Moroccan time. I'm exhausted, another day of surfing, racing Spiegel the hostel dog in the sand, walking the Medina, and then taking care of business at the hostel. I've got No Name the kitten we rescued from the street sitting on my lap, playing with the glasses hung off my shit, and purring in a volume shocking from such a teeny thing. I'm so tired! I'm moving on in the next couple of days. My walk today helped me realize exactly what the nomadic Juliette-Binoche-Chocolat-wind feeling was about-- I need to leave, because this place is making me, well... fat. Metaphorically, speaking, obviously ... read more

I'm still in Essaouira-- when was the last time I posted? yesterday? The days run into each other here- and I live sans watch, calendar, and sense of direction, so it's a bizarrely euphoric feeling of disorientation. I'm now pseudo-working at the hostel I'm staying at- staying for free in exchange for entertaining the owners and doing the odd clean-up (which, as my friends all know, is practically the reason I get invited to parties nowadays...) I am, however, exhausted, as I went SURFING yesterday and it. was. amazing. I actually got up quite a few times and rocked the waves. Then again, the only reason I got up is because the manager of the hostel was pushing me at the good waves as opposed to letting my weak chicken arms paddle-- but nonetheless. I love ... read more

The past couple of days... have been SWEET. I think this is the only word I have to describe it. I'm in this littlish city on the sea called Essaouira (Sa-wee-ra), and the vibe here is absolutely incredible. What have I been up to the past couple of days? ... What haven't I been up to in the past couple of days? I've gone for long walks on the beach, exchanging conspiracy theories with a local about the island off the coast that no one is allowed on (the government says it's because there is a rare species of bird on the island....) I've chilled out of the ramparts of the old castle on the sea here. I've met locals who have alternatively: taught me german, taught me arabic, taught me saharan drumming, exchanged buddhist philosophy ... read more

Hello! Kelly and I are now in a town called Essaouira, which is about an 8 hour bus ride from Casablanca down the west coast of Morocco. Getting off of the bus was quite overwhelming! It didn't appear to be the quaint ocean town we had read about. The ocean was nowhere in sight and it was dirty and dusty. There were people everywhere trying to get us to go to their hotel and women with only their eyes revieled trying to get us to look at their goods for sale. It was hard to read the level of "friendliness" without being able to see smiles under the material. Luckily, we had already booked a room at the Essaouira Hostel and we were picked up by someone who works there. The hostel is located in the ... read more

When deciding on the trip to Morocco, one of the attractive features was that, despite being super dooper laid back and being able to do lots of yoga, we also got to travel around a bit. So the following day (Saturday I think) after our morning yoga session and chilling out over breakfast, it was into a mini bus and off to Sidi Kaouki. Now Sidi Kaouki is definitely off the beaten track, while still only 27kms from Essaouira, which was to be our next port of call. In fact my Lonely Planet guide for Morocco - yes, nerd alert! - indulges just over half a page on the small place, really only highlighting that it is mostly popular with wind surfers. Really just a collection of ramshackle buildings, it is hard to tell where the ... read more

so yeah, this ones in english. so essouira is this lil city by the coast nearest to marrakech. it gets all the wind of the dessert as it is; well; basically in the dessert. and it is surrounded by a portuguese fortress which zith the natural fortress that some rocky islands constitute gives it a unique look. it is a peaceful spot where yuou can see fisherman and you dont get too harrased byt people selling srtisany. on the other hand; youll get offered any kind of drugs every 15mins according to my personal experience. all bad quality and expensive; of course (including beer; the MOST FORBIDDEN one). I slept in some kind of hostel; crappy; didnt even sax the manager (so i didnt pay hehe) full of stoners. huh.. its also zindy as hell. anyway... ... read more

After a week to reflect, im finally sitting down to share my Moroccan adventures. My entry might be a little slim this time because I uploaded and labelled my pics first so I feel like I already covered a lot of the basic things that we did on the trip. The other thing is that unlike almost everything else I have done this year there were not the crazy stories to tell..it was just a wonderful, relaxing vacation. Our flight left at 830am on Friday morning with not a hitch. We were there early, had a starbucks in the airport and a lovely breakfast on board. I sat beside a Morrocan lady who had been living in Toronto with her husband who she had just divorced! She spoke some English and French, so I was able ... read more

A blast of wind welcomes me as I open the van door. Sand whirls across the dusty car-park where we're stopped forming miniature sand-banks in the corners of the low surrounding wall. The wind blows the sand with such force that as it hits the wall it ricochets upwards in a fountain of dust that gives the violent air visible form. Its windier than normal, here in Essouaira, otherwise known as 'windy city' and along the sea-front is where it is most ferocious. But there is respite. The medina is a hive of activity, a hotch-potch of vendors selling everything you could possibly need. Fancy a pigs leg to suck on, complete with trotter - look no further! There is a thriving cafe culture here, not least because of the hundreds of tourists that flow through ... read more

Being the complete and utter tight arses that we are we decided to move into the cheaper room we had originally booked. The room is half the price (£6 for a double room) and exactly the same but without the view of the sea. I think the owner always puts people in the rooms with views to begin with in the hope that you will love it and not bother to change. We left our hotel and turned onto the main street and our noses led us directly to a food stall. There was a woman standing over a hot plate making square pancake type things, they smelt beautiful. We ordered one each and they were served with a completely unhealthy helping of butter and honey. We walked out of the relative comfort of the medina ... read more
