So we decided to go to Casablanca on Saturday, which was really cool. It was definitely a highlight to be in Starbucks again...There is a huge mall there, but it's pretty expensive so we did not spend much time there. We went to the biggest mosque in Africa and it was absolutely breathtaking, probably one of the most beautiful things I have seen in my life. The street vendors were pretty good, for such a huge city with a lot of draw for tourists, they did not try and up the prices for us, which often happens to us since we do not look Moroccan. I tried to focus on using more Arabic than French, because I only have two more months here and I really want to better my Arabic, since this is an excellent ... read more

Casablanca is a large bustling modern city and the port is the largest in North Africa. We appear to be the only cruise ship in port but there are bulkers loading phosphate and container ships loading and unloading. The day is warm and sunny but not too humid. We board our bus, one of three, heading for the capital city of Rabat but first we must deal with the rush hour traffic. The streets are wide boulevards but the cars are bumper to bumper and then there are the bicycles motorbikes and carts and pedestrians crossing wherever they want. Horn honking is accepted and expected. Slowly we head out to the highway that will take us to Rabat. Our guide today is Benis and he is proud to point out the growing economy and the good ... read more

Lotty's version Our journey recommenced with a train ride from Marrakech to Casablanca. As you will gather from Planty's entry we left Marrakech with heavy hearts. we had grown fond of the city where the best food was in the street, seatbelts and indicators both appear optional and you can buy half a shark in the local Carrefour..... Casablanca had a lot to live up to! We negotiated taxis and trains to Casablanca with ease, like experienced travellers. Our only slight hiccup was that we were in carriage 1, compartment 3, seats 35/36 on the train. Obviously this is Morocco so carriage 1 is the second one along and we ended up having to move seats, walking down a moving train and crossing carriages with our rucksacks was no easy task, however we left a compartment ... read more

From far off, through circuitous corridors, came the scent of citrus-blossom and jasmine, with sometimes a bird’s song before dawn, sometimes a flute’s wail at sunset, and always the call of the muezzin..." ~ Edith Wharton In Morocco 41 hours of hellish flights and airport stopovers that were too long to be comfortable and too short to be of any use except for staring morosely at fellow travellers caught in the same unfortunate predicament. But there is a price to be exacted for all great experiences...and this was ours. Having paid our dues we finally landed in Casablanca, in more or less one piece... Scott being "the less" - not being accustomed to long haul flights or such drastic time zone changes. This meant most of our first day in bed recovering, although he did venture ... read more

Saturday Day 7 It's Paddy's day! With two Irish lasses on board, the flag is flying and Irish music accompanied a breakfast of sausages and scrambled eggs. We were a bit late for our 9am departure today but soon enough we were on the road, en route to Casablanca which should take around 6 hours. A few of us amused ourselves with a game of Scrabble, after which I listened to my iPod and dozed, snuggling into my new pillow with the pillowcase I received as a gift (thanks Emma!). Pretty sure I woke up yet again with my mouth gaping open but hey, at least I don't snore... When we arrived in Casablanca, we found that the campsite had given away our reservation to the plastic fantastics so Suse found a taxi that she could ... read more

Having thankfully missed the Mr Made in Italy contest last night we had a full day at sea before arriving in Casablanca. There was an evening of activities with an Italian theme to celebrate 150 years of Italian unification. Apparently Italy has only existed as a single country since 1861. We were also told that there is so many varieties of pasta to choose from you could eat a different type for every day of the year. Why didn't we just get told there are at least 365 shapes of pasta (or 366 in a leap year!!) An Italian joke: "The trouble with eating Italian food is that 5 or 6 days later you're hungry again!!"Not too sure if we were suppose to laugh or order food??!! A full day at sea wouldn't be complete without ... read more

Today we are saying our farewells to Morocco and flying to Egypt, landing in Cairo. From El Jadida the road is a dual lane freeway to Casablanca. A toll even needs to be paid a nice change to all the other roads driven on in Morocco. We find a petrol station, find the airport and find where to drop off our car. All without too much drama for a change. The people and the officials are so friendly at the airport, although I am a little bit sick of hearing the word Kangaroo. When we go through all the checks, and there is quite a few, they just give us a smile and wave us through. I guess there is not a lot of Australian terrorists. We are flying Air Maroc not probably one of the ... read more

1) Always have a supply of alcohol on hand (NOTE: rule only applies if you have alcoholic parents). 2) Betty is a bimbo (GPS). Road signs are few, when driving you have to follow your nose. Directions are given but rarely understood... (leading to lesson number 3) 3) LEARN SOME FRENCH (and if possible, some Arabic and Berber, or at least ‘shokrum’ and ‘salam’) 4) Don’t underestimate the weather (the Sahara is NOT always warm), skimpy clothes NOT optional, dress warmly 5) If you meet a friendly local THEY WANT MONEY... (leading to lesson number 6) 6) Don’t expect change! (any extra cash you hand over will be considered a tip) Always carry little change. However, locals are honest, they won’t steal. 7) Toilets are surprisingly clean and usually supply toilet paper. Way beyond Asian standards. ... read more

The Flight I feel about aeroplanes the way I feel about diets. It seems to me they are wonderful things for other people to go on. (Jean Kerr) Most people do not believe they are on holidays until they reach their destination; in our case first stop Dubai but I like to think the holiday begins the moment I walk out the door. George is taking us to Sydney, left home 12.30am arrived uneventfully Sydney airport 4am. Parked, met Natarsha, checked in, passed through customs and boarded our plane. Perfectly timed. We are flying Emirates, 14hours to Dubai, arrive 1pm Dubai time. Emirates, I guess, is the best of the best. The air hostess’ are immaculately groomed, no middle aged gentleman on this flight. I feel it is necessary for them to be good looking, and ... read more

Dropped the rental car in Marrakech - it was relatively hassle free, after we found the car rental place hidden inside a petrol shop inside a back alley inside a hidden area of the new town ... but hey! That's what travel is about eh? We would never have found the place based on the map point given to us by the rental guy in Fez. We should have used a GPS ... but we used the higher tech method of asking knowledgeable locals. The trick is to find the one person with the right knowledge and ignore the 15 other very helpful locals who point you in the wrong direction because they don't want to offend you by saying they don't know what you're asking about! Not much different than a GPS that wants to ... read more
