July 1, 2017 - Today was a real day of adventure. I got up at 7am and was out a little after 8am. My destination? The Black River Gorges National Park. The challenge? Being frugal. There is no direct bus to the park, so I asked a tour agency the other day how much it would cost to take me/pick me up. It was about $55, which seemed like a lot. And this, my friends, is one of the times when traveling alone sucks. Everything costs more because there is no one to share the cost with you. I also asked Bernard if I could take the bus. He said yes - take the bus to the nearby Cascavelle "Mall" and then take another bus to Black River. I would have to walk from there but ... read more

Mauritius is a destination I've wanted to visit for over a decade, but always seemed to be on the back burner for some reason. I have friends in Sydney who were born on this beautiful island, and it's a thrill to finally have the chance to visit. The Mascarene Islands are my home base for the next five weeks island hopping, and it all begins on the west coast resort town of Flic en Flac. With ten nights booked at the gorgeous Villa Osumare right by the beach, it's time to get the ball rolling on a new set of travel adventures. I jetted with Air Mauritius from Sydney to Perth, and it's a further nine hours flying time direct to this tropical paradise. It's currently winter, and the temperature rises to around 26 degrees in ... read more

Mauritius - Réunion 28. Oktober 2013 - 24. November 2013 29.

Time for another update: So, my life over here is in full swing now and I’m nearing the half way point! Work is much of a routine, but the early mornings are getting easier (I doubt they will be as much fun in theUKwhen it is cold, wet and dark), and work is ticking over quite well. The arrival of two volunteers to the field station eases the work load, even if it does increase the amount of loud chatter in French, of which I hardly understand a word and just excuse myself most of the time. On the plus side, this means I get a lot of reading done though, even venturing into the classic literature – secure in the knowledge that I will read it all intently, simply for the fact there is little ... read more

Initially, I must apologise for a long overdue update. It’s amazing how fast weekends seem to disappear when you spend Saturday morning working and then travelling to the weekend house. The afternoon is then soon eaten into menial tasks such as shopping and washing, and then the desire to spend my weekend attached to my laptop is often diminished by the beach that awaits 5 minutes walk from the doorstep… I have then also spent a couple of weekends working on the island, which although usually peaceful and quiet, deprives me of some of the modern world comforts that the weekend brings; such as internet. And power on demand. Irregardless of where I spend the weekend though it is still true, that bats are known to scream well into the night, gecko poo can drop onto ... read more

Another week has passed and seen as last week was a long weekend the time has seemed to go very quickly these past few days! I’m increasingly brown (for me!) but it’s difficult to tell if this is tan, sunburn of just grime that won’t be scrubbed off. I was told earlier today that mosquitoes are attracted to sweat. All I can say that is if this is true, I have no hope during the working week. This week I was working with the Olive White Eyes, which are similar to the Fodys but have a slightly more intensive feeding routine and fewer birds on the island. On the whole they have quite defined territories that they maintain to an extent throughout the year, so this week was some territory searches and nest watching. We also ... read more

For a small island Mauritius punches well above its weight for two things – long, slow queues at the airport immigration counter and beautiful red Indian Ocean sunsets. Actually, Mauritius no doubt has many other beautiful and worthwhile attractions, but having come to the end of our Africa visit we decided to just enjoy the beach and the pool and leave the rest. If there is a world-renowned shopping mall, or an escalator direct to the Lost City of Atlantis, we apologise and will be back to look at it one day, but for this trip if we were 50 paces from the pool it was too far. The Sofitel, on the west coast of the island near a place rather quaintly named Flic en Flac, takes its French heritage quite seriously, and is populated mostly ... read more

Hi everyone, We are now in our 2nd day at Kwandwe Private Game Reserve on the Eastern Cape, South Africa and on the 12th day of our travels. We have seen so much already! As well as getting married on 6th March in Mauritius, we have been Big Game fishing and caught a Barracuda, Dolphin watching in Tamarin Bay, a Catamaran Cruise along the West Coast of Mauritius, and now here we are in an out of this world private Game Reserve. After two Safari drives we have already seen Lions including 3 month old cubs at very close quarters, Giraffes, Rhino, Spring Bok, Wilderbeast, Jackal, Giant tortoise, Zebra, and more. There are 2 game drives per day at 6am and at 4pm so hoping to see much more before we leave. We were originally staying for ... read more
