Kara dancing the night away with Tewa
January 2nd--here in Bamako, playing drums everyday, learning a lot, classes in the morning and afternoon and into the night, hanging out with great teachers at the Djembe Hotel. Jeremy and Tewa have been great hosts helping us absorb the often overwhelming atmosphere of Africa. The internet has been down for a few days. We're mostly hanging out at their home; adventures outside require effort and planning. Today Kara's going to the market and I'm going to go watch a djembe ballet perform in town. We're looking forward to seeing Jack and Sharon arrive tonight. It's hard to plan everything for our journey to Timbucktu--we're trying to arrange a car and driver, etc. Sometimes it sounds like a tourist trap, but we still want to get out and see more of Mali, hoping it will all fall into place. We're also going to my drum teacher's village this weekend; Sega's village is about 3 hours away. It should be a great way to see the rootsy part of Mali away from the city; hopefully the air will be clean and fresh. We've decided that if we miss Bamako when we get back home, we'll just put some exhaust fumes and burnt

garbage into a plastic bag and inhale it once and a while.
We had an awesome New Year's Eve with the family and friends here. We decided not to go out and see expensive music but instead stay here with our African friends. It's nice to get to know a place more fully rather than rush around everywhere. We hope that your New Year's was fun and that 2008 brings us all good health and happiness. From Africa we wish you bon santi and bon chance. All the best, LOVE Kevin n Kara
