Geo: -14.0174, 34.851 Decided to walk into town and check out markets and Fat Monkey's. We had been told we could rent a kayak from them and that was one of the things we wanted to check out.As we walked into town, and through town people were friendly, lot's of hello's and the children would say hello and every once in a while would ask for money or sweets. Some of the people wanted to know where we were going, staying etc. Think it is good to have a destination in mind to tell them so they do not join you walking and try to say that they had showed you where to go and expect a tip.As we walked along, there were lots of interesting street scenes. People making bricks, the sounds of the maize ... read more

Geo: -13.9808, 33.7721Camp Maclear is a World Heritage site located on Lake Malawi. The local name for this location is Chembe and the place we are staying is Chembe Eagle's Nest. In l980, the Lake Malawi National Park was created which was the first freshwater national park in the world. In l984, the area was designated a World Heritage site. The soil evidently is poor for farming and fishing and tourism seem to be the main industry in the village. Our view is quite nice. We have a rock outcropping in front of us and we can watch the fishing boats going back and forth from the village. The fishermen use both the dugout and the motorboat. Chembe Eagle's Nest also does the billing process where you pay at the end of your stay. Since we are ... read more

This is really long again! I would recommend a pot of tea and a packet of biscuits..... Jessica, Laci and I went to Mount Mulanje over the easter weekend. This is our story: Part one: The unexpected Journey. It was Thursday afternoon when I had finished packing for our wonderful weekend ahead, Laci came at around 2:30 in her big car, she had brought lots of things like coffee, pumpkins and food for camping, she had filled up the car with anything we could possibly need, (I think she took one of the Peace Corps's sayings quite literally on this occasion.) We all jumped into the car in high spirits and left on our hopefully 4 hour journey to Blantyre. Where the only cinema in the whole of Malawi is and according to Laci the most ... read more

Entering Zambia Once the immigration formalities were completed, it was clearly visible on entry into Zambia that it was more developed than Malawi. I came to the conclusion of this in a matter of minutes. As we passed through the Eastern Province of Zambia, which is the most deprived region of this country - we saw signs, good roads and decent sound infrastructure - all of the school children we saw had identical uniforms too. This certainly isn't the case in Malawi. On arrival into Chipata, the town boasted various supermarket chains and banks, plus many other amenities. For a small town, it was quite developed, perhaps not surprising though given it's isolation from the rest of Zambia. One other noticeable difference was the number of cars on the road, in Malawi you got used to ... read more

Ok, I know its been a while... about a month, as its been so long I'm just going to write about what I can remember... So Lets start with the most wonderful public transport we have here... (I have lots of stories but these are my favourites) The 1st story: Jessica and I had to get home from the lake after our camping trip with Thia. We waited at the corner where the path to the lake meets the main road for 30 mins and finally got in a tok-tok that was so full, 4 people were hanging on to the outside. When squished in, with our camping bags, thankfully we didn't have the tent and bedding! I counted all the people that were also squished inside, there were 18 people including the men hanging on ... read more

Eventless food My food in Malawi does feed me so basically it makes the job, but there is not so much I enjoy in it. I have the feeling that eat exactly the same things all the time but that’s not completely right, living on the campus of the school where I work gives me 3 options. First option I can get the school food, which is prepared for the students three times a day. The other teachers eat at their home on the campus and the other employees of the school eat their own food. So far after 2 months here I never managed to be awake on time for the breakfast so I can’t say much about it, I just heard it was porridge during the week and bread on the week-end. Then, for ... read more

Arriving in Malawi was an experience to say the least! Firstly, the Travelex at the airport didn't take card payments for currency and my visa debit card didn't work in the ATM's outside. Whilst trying several times at the ATM, I had 5 or 6 taxi drivers all shouting asking where I want to go. I'm trying my best to ignore them as I have to unpack my rucksack to get to my credit card to see if that works in the ATM. Thankfully, it did and I've got in the first taxi I see. Then there's a big argument lasting up to 15 minutes, pushing and shoving, and taxi drivers doing tug of war with my rucksack all arguing as to who is going to take me. I took a taxi to the nearest town ... read more

Hello again. Very sorry for the delay. I think it's been almost two months since I last wrote a blog so I will try sum up the past few weeks as concise as possible. Over the past few weeks I have continued to teach at the school as well as being involved in the other projects on site. We had a special treat at the school when two travellers said they would perform their musical instruments for us. The instruments were a banjo and a flute, they played a range of irish and balkan music which was brilliant. The kids loved it and spent most of the lesson dancing on the tables. It was not only something different but very fun too and it exposes them to different music from around the world which is important. ... read more
