Day 2 Snorkelling We negotiated with some of the local guys on the beach to hire a boat for 9 of us to take us to the little Momba island to go snorkelling (MK780 each) and then another MK400 per person for food which was a lot of rice, tomatoes and braai-grilled fish - it was really good. The snorkelling was so different to anything I have seen before - lots and lots of tiny fish - blues, yellow, black. It was so nice to be in the water and with fins and mask. After snorkelling they took us around to look at the Kingfishers. The locals throw fish into the water and call the birds - they then swoop down and catch the fish out the water - its incredible to watch. Party on the ... read more

Happy New Year!! I’m sitting watching turquoise Lake Malawi from the Gecko Lounge in Cape Maclear. I arrived five days ago expecting to stay one night and am now waiting for the office so that I can add yet another… It’s beautiful. The sunsets, the people, the local kids who are pinching cashew nuts from under the tree… I can cope with sitting around here a bit longer. Plus Malawi’s victory over Algeria yesterday has put all of us in a good mood. Since getting to Malawi, things have turned around a bit. There’s lots more other travellers here for one thing, but also Malawians are genuinely friendly, helpful and almost all speak excellent English. The climate is warm and sunny with some awesome storms (a couple of which I experienced whilst sleeping on the top ... read more

WE SENT THIS A LONG TIME AGO WITHOUT PICTURES, NOW WE HAVE A FAST CONNECTION SO WE ARE REPOSTING WITH PICS. WE WILL GET EVERYTHING ELSE UP TO DATE SOON! (FYI-You can click on picture to view full size) Hi Everyone! Here's more of our continuing adventures in Malawi. Sorry but no pics this time. We just can't find an internet cafe with a fast enough connection to let us download pictures. We'll send them later. After our Mulanje Mountain trek we went back to Blantyre for 2 nights for rest and laundry. Then back on another bus to Monkey Bay. This bus ride was okay, packed full, but not to long, 6 hours. The bus dropped us off at the turn off to Cape Maclear as there was a taxi waiting to take people to ... read more

Hey Hey Hey!! Hope you guys are all well! It’s been a little while since I last checked in! I left you in Lilongwe, newlywed! I’ll pick up from there! Married life was great fun, We spent our ‘honeymoon’ eating pizza and ice cream at Mama Mia’s, an absolute gem of an Italian restaurant nestled away behind poinsettia trees in the sleepier districts of Lilongwe’s old town, so well hidden it took us two days to find it. At some point between pizza, powers spirit, hangovers and lazy days in the sun I spotted a poster looking for volunteers. Now, way back in October 2007 when I decided I wanted to travel and gave up a great big chunk of my life to do so, it was researching volunteer projects in Africa that really put the ... read more

Hey! Well, Africa was amazing, I am doing today's blog update on Malawi as there is just too much for each place to stick it all into one entry! Mark and I arrived in Lilongwe, Malawi after our 8 hour flight from London to Nairobi, layover for a couple hours in the AM and then 2.5 hours flight from Nairobi to Lilongwe. We were met by our driver/guide Henry and cook Raphael. We didn't yet realize that they were booked just for us for the first 5 days of our holiday. Henry was quite friendly and informed us about various things in their culture. We took a few different roads to check out things such as the tobacco farming, etc. It would take us a few hours to get from the airport to Mua Mission where ... read more

Forgot about me didn't ya... As you know I just arrived in northern Thailand for my new post with UNHCR, but I want to quickly wrap up the last few months in Malawi because there was so much going on! I will get these out quickly so I can start posting pictures of my new digs. I think I may have mentioned in an earlier blog that I had been trying for months to organize some kind of traditional dance lessons in Lilongwe. These finally got off the ground in the first week of September, after I managed to find a space, and Kaye—the wonderful head dancer from the Congolese group Gigi & The Shooting Stars (whose videos I featured in an earlier blog)—signed on as our instructor. In fact, three band members all came to ... read more
