It's February-March 2004 and Elektra and I decided to jump back to where all began... Kenya is a wonderful country, but not for the sunny beaches seen on the travel agencies' catalogues or the luxury hotels you can find on the web. It is amazing for the contrasts you can experience continuosly, for the white-men-owned resorts in the middle of poverty, for the incredibly beautiful savanna dotted with children who learn to read and write under the trees, and the variety of animals and plants you can sight. ... read more

We are picked up at the Hotel Boulevard by our tour company. At 0800 we loaded the minivans with our gear and were introduced to our drivers/tour guides for the 3 days (remember we said 2 days earlier? Well, we packed for 2 days, i.e. 1 night, I suppose we’ll just turn our underpants inside-out on the last day) in the Masai Mara. Simon was our driver and guide; he would prove to be an excellent guide, but a good driver? The jury is still out on that! Our first day on the Mara was spent mainly pushing our van out of muddy ditches in the torrential African rain, team building during physical hardship in uncomfortable conditions is something you should be paid for and NOT pay for, we survived that excitement anyhow. Day 2 of ... read more

We arrived at the Airport to find that our expected transfer was nowhere to be seen, after being harassed by touts, thieves, murderers and god knows who else, all of whom were there to take us to our hotel and who worked, allegedly, for our tour company. We managed to find a girl in the same predicament as us. Natasha had already contacted the Hotel Boulevard and someone was en-route to rescue us! 30 minutes later our taxi arrived, our elation was soon quashed when we arrived at “our hotel”, only to find that they had double booked and our names were certainly NOT on the list! After much arguing and spitting of feathers, Natasha and us were despatched to the hotels sister hotel, Hotel 680. Upon arrival, again, nobody had heard of us, eventually we ... read more

Yesterday was a good day. After torrential downpours the night before, we got up at 5:40 a.m. to see there was no rain. The generator kicks on at that time and all the florescent lights buzz loudly and glare brightly as if announcing that the school semester has again started. To get 14 kids up, dressed, fed, and ready to be on the road is quiet the show. Actually all the kids do really well changing, making their beds and cleaning their rooms before leaving. It is pleasantly peaceful as I step out of the dorm to walk to the kitchen for morning coffee. In the mornings the mist lies gracefully on the fields and its neatly lined rows of cabbage and corn, the trees, and the houses that are scattered along the hillside. In the ... read more

We woke up to see Spakes Weavers & Olive Thrushes over the hotel gardens then after breakfast we met up with the rest of the Dragoman group, Steve & Tim our guide/chefs/drivers/mechanics, Justin, Maria, Mark, Jason, Nathan, Tracy, Liz, Kate, Naomi, Lizzy, Leroy, Robin, Tom, Butch & Barbara, the rest of the gang. We then went to the Nairobi Museum behind our hotel which had an excellent Joy Adamsen exhibition including paintings of all the Maasai tribes. After lunch we moved to our first camping stop (Nairobi Upperhill campsite) where a couple of the group went shopping for provisions while the rest of us familarised ourselves with the tents (ours is called Waterfall). Once we had worked out how to use the zips & inflated our bedding paraphernalia we made our way over Narobis pot hole ... read more

We have successfully secreted ourselves into Hotel Boulevard- which is pretty basic for the dosh but far superior to what we can probably expect in a tent! Lovely gardens though with sounds from the river beyond. Also our transfer driver was an ace tour guide- as soon as you hop in he was off on the full demographics of the country. There are 30M people in Nairobi and 70% speak swahili. 50% speak english as they are always taught in english at school and only 50% get there. Phew so many facts....... read more

Just to let you all know, I've found a great internet cafe (in Zambia now!) and managed to upload all remaining Egypt photos on the last entry so check them out!! And now for KENYA!!!! Considering all 23 countries that I'm visiting on this trip, I've been most excited about Kenya and East Africa in general. Whether it's the lure of wild animals, the confirmed sunshine, the tribal traditions or even the touch of family history-I knew a good time would be had. And a good time it certainly was!!! I was scheduled to arrive in Nairobi in the very early morning hours, so was rather relieved to see my name held up by the Guerba tour group driver. "Jambo" I exclaimed! The attempted kiswahili that I had always dreamed of being fluent at was appreciated, ... read more

there is a restaurant in nairobi that is rated one of the top 50 in the world. it's called carnivore and it's famous for, you guessed it, meat. vegetarians, read no further. the meal starts off with soup and bread. who do they think they are dealing with? like i'm gonna be stupid enough to fill up on bread? i had a few spoons of soup to taste and waited. next comes the two-tiered plate with sauces for the meat on top and salads on the bottom. on the middle of the top plate goes the flag. as long as the flag is up, they will keep serving you. then, you wait again. over comes the first server with a big skewer of something. "what is it?" "spare ribs" "ok, one." he puts a rib on ... read more

Greetings from Kenya! I finally made it! Thank JESUS! After almost 24 hours of traveling I'm finally here. I went to Amsterdam on transit and took a tour of the city. I fell asleep during the tour, but I did wake up for the tour of "Diamond Land" lol. My favorite place! They showed us how they shaped diamonds into what they look like on jewlery. I'll post pictures of that later. Now, I've been in Kenya for about 10 hours. It is pretty hot :(.So far I've taken a nap, went to get a SIM card (but my phone hasn't been unlocked yet...thank you T-mobile) and now I'm at the National Youth Peace Association office, who are the people organizing our mission. We're going to the Coptic Church right now to see if we can ... read more
