An air of excitement fills the small plane for our 1 hour flight from Nairobi to the Masai Mara airstrip. I am seated beside a Spanish naturalist who specializes in large cats and snakes. She was really beautiful and so serene in the sunlight.

As evidenced by their size differences, these babies were not born at the same time. Lions only require a 3 1/2 month gestation period.

They really do laugh - and quite loudly - when they come upon a meal. Bones are part of their diet and they even poop white! Rarely are bones seen on the plains. Also interesting is that no other animal can eat the spicy hyena meat except for another hyena.

Appropriately named by Dixon due to their common presence, running across the plains, tails twirling like a whirligig behind them. They made me laugh! And yes, their Swaheli name is "pumba".

A rare sighting of the park's famous leopard, Zawadi. She is 18 years old and currently has 1 cub. Many photographers track her in hopes of one of these rare glimpses.
