It's been a huge week here in Kenya. Not just for me, but for the country as a whole. Oooh Where to begin. . . I'll start with giving you a tidbit of the mayhem that broke out on our ride to Eldoret, Kenya to visit an IDP camp. When people talk about learning about 'real' Kenya, they often are referring to understanding the depths of the poverty, disease, and hunger that occur here. However, there's another side of 'real' Kenya which I have been horribly ignorant about, until I experienced a bit of it first hand. Many conversations with Kenyans often drift to the corruption within the police and political system here in Kenya. 'Street justice' is often used as a means to punish suspected criminals. When I say street justice, what I mean is ... read more

Before I begin, I'd just like to say that I am safe and okay at the moment, but a lot has just happened and if I don't write this all down right now, I think my body will realize what happened and I will shut down and forget everything. So here goes. To start off the story, I came down with malaria a few days ago. Not a big deal here, it's as common as the flu, and I caught it early on, so one more day of medication and I'm cured. So I couldn't go to the clinic because I was sick so John, my director decided to take Kasey and I along on a little road trip to Eldoret to drop off Magda at her new project, a refugee camp. The day started off ... read more

I arrive in Nairobi and head straight to the rendezvous with my truck - Hyena. The first 73 days of my trip through Africa will be on an overland truck, from Nairobi to Cape Town. We will pass through ten countries and cover more than 5,000km, starting off in East Africa and working our way slowly south and west, to finish at the southernmost point on the continent. We start off by driving north through the great Rift Valley, stopping on the way to buy provisions. While the truck is parked up, I chat to Christian and Justin from the Democratic Republic of Congo - refugees who have walked hundreds of kilometres to camp outside Nairobi’s UN compound, in a desperate wait for a job or Western sponsorship. I expected stories like this in Africa, but ... read more

Though there are buses that go straight through from Nairobi to Kampala in barely more than half a day, I don't feel like spending that long in a bus of unknown comfort levels so decide to break up the journey half-way in Eldoret in western Kenya. Though the company I choose don't do international trips, their bus turns out to be surprisingly good with decent legroom and a mere 6 other passengers. The security check when we board is a nice touch, though having to undergo another one after the toilet stop in Nakuru is a little tedious. I've already done half of the journey before, on my Masai Mara/Lake Nakuru safari, and doze for much of this repeat viewing. The road certainly gets worse beyond Nakuru, and one stretch has been tarmaced but for some ... read more

Here are a few pictures of our daily life in Kenya. Sarah splits her time between working at the pediatric center at the hospital and working in the marketing department for a factory of HIV positive women who make jewelry and other artisan crafts. I tend to go to the hospital every morning and do a lot of standing around, although this week I've spent time in rural health clinics doing outpatient work with HIV positive Kenyans.... read more

We've been staying in the medium to large sized city of Eldoret now since Sunday. This should be our home for the next 7 weeks. Initially, the staff at our little complex of apartments had Sarah engaged to a different person named Patrick, which has worked in our favor because we have a pimp pad and would have only had a single room with outside bath. We've been working in the Moi Teaching and Referal Hospital now for the past couple days and traveling to town in the afternoon in order to breath in the dust and tempt fate and the crazy drivers. Attached are some pictures of our house and around the town.... read more

I started this travel blog endeavour with the pre-warning that I was unsure about how much internet access I'd have while in Africa & how slow it'd be. The answers are 'not much' and 'painfully' respectively. So much seems to have happened since the first blog (far too much to offer it in any depth) so I'll try and be succint - or try and get it done before the computer shuts down without explanation... So, after the Samburu game park we headed through Nakuru into Eldoret - and to the most luxurious campsite ever!! bliss. Somehow we managed to get a day ahead of ourselves on the itinerary (on day 4??) but it meant two nights in the sweet campsite so no-one was complaining. We asked about visiting a local school, seeing as how we ... read more

After the exhaustion of Kili it was nice to get back to 'civilisation' and head back to my lovely hostel in Nairobi. I was too tired and sore to do anything there so spent the day relaxing before heading over to the poshy la la hotel to meet the guys on the truck. I had a huge fantastic room to myself even with a bath!!! After chilling in my room and watching King Kong on tv (quite apt since I was hoping to see gorillas!) I nervously went to the bar to the "night before trip" drinks. I could see a few people in there that looked like possible backpackers but really wasnt sure so went to get a drink and dutch courage first. Heading to some guys I asked them if they were from Oasis ... read more

Xmas Bashes With hectic December schedules we had our staff Christmas parties about mid-month. June and I took the staff out in Chulaimbo to the Mamba Hotel which has the best chicken in Western Kenya. We took off from work about 3:30pm and drove into Kisumu where we all enjoyed our Christmas Bash as it’s called here in Kenya. We ate, drank and passed out gifts while enjoying each other’s company. June and I gave short speeches of appreciation for everyone’s hard work. A few days later when I returned to Eldoret I took the staff there out for dinner at The Klique which was a smaller but equally fun bash - where again everyone at chicken and I gave a short appreciation speech. Not too much to tell here, just a regular group of co-workers ... read more
