Nairobi airport after 26 hrs travel, feeling lemon fresh!

Charlie the taxi driver shuttled us the 20min trip to the Wildebeest Ecocamp in a miraculous 1hr 20min. Would've been worse but Charlie knew a shortcut. Down the barely begun highway bypass. With no drainage. That leads to and past the slums. With 800 000 in an area the size of an MCG, say. Except with no plumbing. Umbrellas a good idea if you dare take the tour, even on fine days.

Charlie's front wheel drive Nissan got us over the final hurdle, a watery ditch past the axles. After 5 mins stranded in the middle, just as I began rolling up my pants, he found some purchase and moments later we lurched into the shadows of an 8 foot steel gate. The fortified and guarded back entrance to our digs. Yikes.

Inside: Eden! Frogs, graceful trees, green everywhere. Humid but homey. Solar everything, very glam tents, furnished by Freedom's Safari catalogue. Sporadic power supply farts provided added excitement.

Yummy dinner, 70% recognisable - a comfortable figure at the end of a looong trip ending in uncharted territory. Happy to work up to 100% by mid Serengeti, say, next week! For now, feed me froot loops for just one more day.

Frogs got jiggier and jiggier as the light faded. Fresh froggy rhythms accompanied by new crickets on the block. So new, so interesting. So much noisier by the minute... ok by bedtime it was earplug time. Sweet, single night of malaria risk free capital city sleep....
