HOREC
View of HOREC from on top of the boys new dorm. My time is no longer my own…anyone that has a child, or takes care of children realizes that really quickly. I used to have time to sit and think of the creative content I would put into an update…now I am consoled if I can write an update before it is old news.
We, the Lawrences, spent a wonderful time in the states over the holidays. We had the opportunity to speak at some wonderful churches, to share about the work with which we partner here in Kenya, as well as had time to enjoy family and friends. The lavish generosity poured out upon us was truly incredible.
Since returning we have continued to be blown away at God’s provision through His generous people. We are thankful for hearts like yours, that see a need and instead of saying, “Oh, that is too bad”, you rise to the call and meet that need.
Let me give you a few examples of God’s Extravagant Provision through Extraordinary People:
Every January is a time of scrambling for many Kenyans. A new school year starts up and for those joining high school it means school fees, new uniforms and shoes,
New Kitchen/New cabinets
New cabinets were installed courtesy of PG Bison EA.
Thank you PG Bison. supplies, transportation costs, etc. For many Kenyans to come up with a couple hundred dollars for the first term of three(when they may have a salary of $150 in a month) means a scramble to figure out how to get their kids educated. For Spring Valley children who come from destitute homes, often with a single parent, money from the family is not an option. Spring Valley has carried that load for many teenagers for the last three years as well as feeding 350 children two hot meals a day, educating 300 primary kids (k-8th grade), and many other things.
There is one church that usually is able to come up with a partial payment and a few other donors have helped before. This year, it was three days before Secondary school (high school) registration day and SV’s 16 eight grade graduates had no money for school fees. What I felt deep down in my heart was, “God is the Source and the Provider so we have to count on Him for the funds”. Two days before classes began there were 16 nervous children, an anxious Pastor and wife who see to it the kids get off and settled,
Boys new dorm
The boys dorm is newly completed. The boys like it so much, they don't want to hang out with the girls!! and two missionaries wondering where in the world the money would come from. Then, a blessed email came. A Sunday school class in Houston (called the “Encouragers Class”…very appropriate) wrote and said they had the funds for the first term! Woo hoo! Talk about celebrating. Forty eight hours before a new chapter was to begin for these teenagers, the page was turned which set them on their way. Not only has the class donated funds for the first term, but I just got an email saying they were covering the second term as well. What a great example of the body of Christ working together.
Blessed email….what a quick way to hear about provision. (: I have also got emails from a men’s group, a ladies Bible study, and a couple individuals wanting to help with school fees, purchase livestock, assist with construction, etc.
On the ground here we have seen God’s provision as well through various people. Two churches from Durango, Colorado just spent a week serving the children and staff of HOREC. A pastor on the team had challenged his congregation to “Give to God” (in the form of a donation) the same amount of money
1st batch of Chickens
130 Chickens ready for the market they would spend on Christmas presents. He informed HOREC orphanage that from that donation they will be drilling them a clean, deep water well that will service not only the orphanage but the whole community. People from around the globe being generous and touching people across the globe makes me pretty excited and I hope it does you too!
There are more instances and I can’t even record them all at the moment. But those who have played a part in making the lives of these kids better, you know who you are and we thank you!
We will not sit idle but continue to work together this year in order to make an impact of as many children as we can...
Projects for 2011 Keep the missionaries on the field One of our goals of traveling to the states was not only to raise funds for projects but for our monthly support. We still need some supporters on a monthly basis to help us meet our living requirements so that we can continue to work here. If you want to be one of those, we would be grateful.
Spring Valley School Help build a
Breaking Ground!!
We are thrilled that Spring Valley has actually broken ground and is pouring the foundation for their new multi-purpose building. The sooner they get it done the sooner they can offer a safe place for at risk girls! multi-purpose building that will have offices, a library (for the 300 kids that don’t have one), and housing for teenage girls that are at high risk of sexual abuse. Six phases: Phase I-foundation-$5000 (which is almost complete!!!), Phase II-IV-$10,000 each.
Eventually to purchase land where they can start projects to work towards self-sustainability-$14,000 (when the land becomes available).
Third term school fees: $2,000
HOREC Finish the new dorm which will hold an office and library for their 33 children. Since they added yet another six year old girl who’s mom died of AIDS last week, the need for the completed facility just keeps growing (they have taken in two little girls in the last month!).
Purchase of an acre where they can work on self-sustainable projects- $14,000 They already have their chicken coop up and running and they will start seeing a profit from that soon! Thanks to a good friend of mine for purchasing more chicks!
The Giving Garden We are so excited that we received the funding to complete the drip irrigation system in our Giving Garden. This should increase our food production and therefore enable us to give away more food to
Let it grow
The drip irrigation at our Giving Garden works really well. No shortage of food here! those in need.
School Fees for High School Girls Due to three of our six sponsored girls now joining boarding school their fees have risen. One of our girls does not have a sponsor. Any donation will help these girls continue with their education.
- A recent portion of a letter sent by one of our fifteen year old sponsored girls:
"When I grow up and get my professional career (doctor). I pray to God and promise to keep an orphanage to help orphans and unabled families. I have really experienced what it means by being an orphan, as it is the best teacher. It helps a person to plan for the future..." General donations enable us to go above and beyond and help with other various needs that arise each month; eye exams and glasses for those in need, food items, clothing, etc.
If you would like to make a monthly or one time donation please make your check out to:
