Hello, for the last time, from Maua! It is Sunday afternoon, and the internet café is closed, so I will be posting this blog tomorrow during my lunch break. We have had a wonderful last weekend here. Thursday we had Rev. Muriki over with his lovely family. His two children are 2 and 5, and they were so cute and energetic! Tony was very sad to say goodbye to him. Friday night we went to a potluck at the Savuto’s house. After the potluck, we all sat on the floor and played the card game “Nine’s”. We are truly going to miss all of the mission partners we have gotten to know during our few weeks here. Saturday, I wasn’t feeling too well: I felt that I had a bout of flu or a bad cold. ... read more

Today I, Tony, am writing the blog because Starla is busy in the OPD and I wanted to write about our trip to visit Dorcas. This last week of ours is going by so fast. Yesterday, we walked with Andrew from the AIDS orphans program up past Kiegoi to the home that the team from St. Peter’s built for Dorcas in 2005. Andrew is doing an internship for his diploma at the hospital, and he is in charge of the overseeing the building of the homes. He also does semi-annual check-ups on the children who live in the homes. We did not know if Dorcas would be home or not because she is 8 now and is in primary school. However, when we got there her Father greeted us and said that she was home because ... read more

What an eventful weekend we had! Tony and I enjoyed a visit to two churches on Saturday with Rev. Hosea who is the pastor of the circuit (which includes these two churches along with 9 others). Rev. Hosea and his wife had us over for tea before the services, and while we were at their house, we learned how Kenyans prepare food and what kind of stoves they use. We also learned about the 2 week process to make charcoal out of wood. It was a good time, and we had discussions about Kenyan marriage and the fact that arranged marriages are dying out. I asked them about men having more than one wife. I was confused by the fact that it seems that if some men have many wives, does this not leave some men ... read more

Today I don’t have too many new pictures to add, because we have been sticking around the hospital this week and not travelling about. So, the pics aren’t too exciting… but I hope you still enjoy them! We have had fun figuring out what all we can cook with the supplies around here. We can get most groceries in town, but there are many things which you have to travel quite a distance to find (no takeout food, it even takes one hour to drive to the nearest store which sells cheese!). I included a picture of Tony making chapatti, the Kenyan bread which reminds me of Naan (the Indian bread). It is very good! Also, Tony made a “southern meal” which included fried chicken, beans, and a green called “sukumawiki”, which is a lot like ... read more

Well, our time seems to really be winding down here! At the annual Synod meeting, Rev. James told Tony that he is already beginning to miss him. They seem to really have enjoyed working together, and I know they both have a great amount of respect for one another. Tony did a great job preaching on Friday and Saturday for the annual meeting! The theme of the conference was, “Service to God is Service to Humanity”, and Tony said his main goal was to encourage the pastors to continue doing their work. We got to meet the Presiding Bishop of Kenya, who wanted Tony to travel to Northern Kenya (on the border of Somalia) to see that not all of Kenya looks the same, and to see the work of the Methodist Church of Kenya (MCK) ... read more

I’ll try not to make this the longest post ever, but I have so many good pics I want to put up here, and lots to say. First of all, I wanted to add a funny thing that was said last Sunday at the church I mentioned on my previous blog. Tony had visited that church earlier in the week, and when he brought me along on Sunday and the pastor met me, he said to Tony, “Oh, you found a wife who looks like you!”. We got a good laugh out of that! This week has been a busy one for us. It has really flown by, and I can’t believe that 2 weeks from now we will be preparing to leave. Tony visited a church with Rev. James where he was the first white ... read more

Hello there. We are 3 weeks into our working time in Maua, this means it's the halfway point: we will leave to go on Safari 3 weeks from this Wednesday. Time is going by pretty quickly for us, with many new experiences. This weekend was a good one. Saturday we hiked around a ridge in Maua with the Sarsons and Katherine. We hiked to an area that is apparently an old volcanic crater. Very beautiful and lush, and I think I've mentioned before that the area reminds me so much of Costa Rica. On the way down, we ended up in someone's yard/garden area, and couldn't find our way back to the trail. A young man with a US Marines shirt on helped us to find our way back. Tony took a picture with him, and ... read more

What an adventure we had today! I went out with Tony on the circuit while he preached to a youth council. The road there rivals (and in our opinion, beats) the stories of roads crossing rivers which my Dad told me about when he travelled around Mexico when I was a kid. We went to the church in a 1970’s Land Rover which was exactly like the one we had in the 90’s when I was a kid in Costa Rica (I may have thought it to be the same one, if the steering wheel had been on the other side of the car). The drive took about 45 minutes, much of which was along a road which would have been considered an unmaintained hiking trail in WA State. Tony and I were both sincerely amazed ... read more

What a full weekend we had! On Saturday, Tony’s birthday, we had the chance of seeing 2 Jackson’s Chameleons in a tree! They are for sure the most photographed chameleons of Maua, as Tony took many pictures!:) We think it was a male and female, and we think the female was pregnant because she was much larger than the male. They were so cool! After this, we had the duel birthday party for Tony and Katherine, the German IT missionary at the hospital. It was so much fun, and we ended with a very lively game of Guesstures (my team won!). Such good food… Claudia (another German missionary who is an occupational therapist) was a baker in her former life in Germany. She made a wonderful Black Cherry Chocolate cake! Tony said it was a very ... read more

April 19th! This is the day of Tony’s birthday… he turns 30 in Kenya! Tonight we will celebrate with the other missionaries and volunteers in a double-party for Tony and Katherine, a volunteer for one year at the hospital. She is an IT person, and is helping to make the hospital computerized. The last week since our arrival in Maua has been full and challenging. We are finding ourselves adjusted to the time zone, but still working to adjust to the pace and life in Maua. I worked in the medical ward 2 days along with Jane, whom I mentioned in a previous post. I also did 2 days in the trauma room, which is basically the hospital’s ER. I have been able to do many dressing changes, giving shots, giving IV treatments, etc. under the ... read more
